South Paws and Pistols. What do yall like to shoot and carry?

A Lefty asked me the other day to help her find a pistol that's easier to operate as a left handed shooter. All the pistols she has tried are made with controls for a righty.

I thought about it for a second and came up with a glock, and a 1911 with an ambi safety.

Glock, i figure with no safety, you could just rack the slide instead of hitting that tiny release... I hardly ever use the release anyway. Mag release could be pushed with the trigger finger.

1911, with an ambi safety would work on the same principal as above.

What do yall think? Any other suggestions I'm over looking?

I don't remember which all brands have the feature, but a lot more are made now with magazine releases that can be switched back and forth to accommodate right or left handed shooters. The next line is the usual see what fits her, otherwise, a nice revolver in 38 spc is almost as ambidextrous as it gets.

Glock is a good choice! You may also look at revolvers. Very easy to use and you can get them for lefties.

I'll have to look at my Springfield xd subcompact when I get home this evening but it functions very similar to a Glock.

              Yep! this is it.

My personal open carry is a ful size USP 45. For women and especially new hand-gunners, I recommend a pistol that requires no memory to operate. A SA/DA revolver of some kind, or a SA/DA pistol if they don't like the wheel gun idea. With a SA/DA pistol, it can be carried with the safety off and hammer in half cocked safe position. To use it, all the operator needs to do is pick it up and pull the trigger. On the HK's I especially like the magazine release being at the base of the trigger guard and the downward motion to operate it.

Gen 4 Glocks are fully ambi, as the mag release can be swapped to the opposite side.

I'm left handed. Always used trigger finger to release the mag. And on my 1911s, I use it to flip the safety off. Haven't gotten around to ordering ambi ones

I'm a South paw as well, but I buy right handed weapons and buy the gear to make it ambidextrous or leave it be. If I leave it as right handed only, it takes a little training and repetition to get used to. Otherwise, Parts are not to expensive or hard to change over. If she can't do it, a smithy (gun smith) could do it.

Thanks for the replies. Keep em coming.

I mentioned a wheel gun.. She kinda snubbed her nose at the idea... So that's probably out. I personally won't be buying this for her, so it's his money to waiste! I've just been asked for suggestions as a gun owner... Although I'm not a lefty. Related but not quite the same.

                        Mitch Hedburg said it best:
When you're in Hollywood and you're a comedian, everybody wants you to do things besides comedy. They say, 'OK, you're a stand-up comedian -- can you act? Can you write? Write us a script?'... It's as though if I were a cook and I worked my *** off to become a good cook, they said, 'All right, you're a cook -- can you farm?'

Serious lefties own these!! Once you set back and look there are VERY FEW true Ambi weapons on the market. Most manufactures are left or right but not both.. The H&K is both... They also have adjustable backstraps to adjust the size of the grip (samll, medium, large) coupled with BIG paddle style mag releases and big slide stop releases...

I just got a Smith and Wesson M&P pro series 9mm. It has ambi slide release, the mag release is easily reversed. It is a great gun for lefties. I also have a HK usp 40 compact. With a left hand safety/decocker. The slide release is wide enough to easily be activated with the trigger finger. I really enjoy shooting both of these guns. I looked at the gen 4 Glock 34 but it just wouldn't work for me as a lefty. I also looked at the Springfield xdm comp. It was nice but not as nice as the M&P and it was also about $175 more.
