If you are looking for a round that is widely used you could always go with a 7.62x51(.308). The round is available in just about every form and function you can think of and has been used for years. If you want to hunt with it, there are wide variety of rounds that you can use on everything from varmits to large game. Close distance to 1000+. Over the counter rounds or build your own. You can find guns in your price range (this one pictured is a little more) ready to shoot.

i can get ammo much more easily for 6.8 than i can for 300. as much as 300 is touted for having had 5m round produced, i dont see much of it anywhere. walmart will begin stocking 6.8 in may some time.

If you already have a 223/5.56 AR and want something bigger I'd definitely jump into an AR-10. 308 and now you have a bigger platform to try new calibers in with just an upper swap.

You can always later on buy a 300 blk upper and switch it on your ar-15 lower.

Yep a "newer" addition to my collection. POF P308 14.5 in .308

I also have an Amralite AR-10 20" that I've hog hunted with for several years. Make sure you save enough to put some good glass on top of whatever you shoot.

Getting an AR10 is near the top of my wish list, but not sure why people you should compare it to the AR15 platform. To me, it's apple vs oranges. If we are going to step up to an AR10 platform than we can start comparing all of the AR10 platform choices.

The OP never specified a particular platform! The 300 BLK was designed for this very argument...

Agreed. U did a nice comparison of the 5.56 to the 300 blackout. How about a 6.8 vs 300 blackout. I think an 85 grain TSX has more killing power and favorable ballistics but am open to be persuaded or proven wrong.

6.8 has its faults. My thought was that anyone wanting to add impact and versatility to their current arsenal, look no further than blackout.

I personally have a ,308 and I don't see the upside to 6.8 in my personal opinion.
