    What am I looking at

    Stamped with Springfield 1899

Has a trapdoor but no caliber markings on it. A buddy got it on a private sale, and is wondering what it is really worth

It is a 30/40 Krag. They were a fine service rifle, with good ballistics and accuracy (NOTE: They were not on par with the M94, M96 Argentine Mauser... but few weapons, then OR NOW are).

They did not fare well in the jungle climes (that box mag got gummed up pretty quick).

They would have seen more action probably, but then the infamous .03 SPRINGFIELD 30.06 came into play (It WAS/IS a match for the Argentine...).

The survivors are a 'quaint' and oft-overlooked bit of mil-surp/C&R culture... and ****-fine rifles.

Cool deal. Is there anyway to get ammo for it. My buddy really wants to shoot it and it looks sound.

Absolutely. There are almost as many sources for it as any 'standard' rifle caliber.

NOTE: In these current 'crazy' days, it is also as hard to find in stock.

NOTE2: I have shot 150, 160, and 180gr bullets from them. If the rifle is good, it will send any of them downrange (out to 300yds) just fine. They were a fairly popular "customizer" for hunting, from the '30s through the '50s (they shared this popularity with the early .303s). The one in your pictures is a mild custom.

They are fun little guns, would really like to own one in the future.
