    Rifle ammo ????

I've always shot just whatever since I rarely shoot more than 5 bullets per year. But got low on 270 ammo and noticed a HUGE difference in prices this year. 17.50 at Wal-Mart for Winchester 130 grain power point but cheapest I saw at Academy was over $35 per box (and they had several different brands).

Why such a huge difference in price? And does one bullet make THAT much of a difference when hunting hogs/deer at under 150 yards?

At that distance just buy corelokts. Or another bullet I've been really impressed with out to 300yds was the Winchester power max bonded bullet. There usually$21 a box roughly.

And I liked it better than corelokts by far. But either will do the trick at 150 yds or under.
I know people that shoot corelokts out a lot farther than that. I'm just not very impressed with there groups. But there good east texas bullets!!

ya see, those ole high fence deer, you could shoot them with a pellet....

but those tough ole low fence deer? better buy a bigger gun that a 270

      i kid....

they still have cheap 270 shells. you just gotta look for em. at 150 does it matter? who knows.... but how are you gonna gaurantee the shots gonna be only 150? either way, you can find em MUCH cheaper than 35 per box.

You pay more for a quality bullet.

Stringent standards, quality control, and bullet design cost money... which they pass on to you.

If you just want a Boat Tail Soft Point, its usually less expensive than a bullet designed to do some nasty damage.

Is it going to make that much of a difference? Depends. If its accurate and you can be 100% of your shot placement then no... a SP will kill just as well as a Barnes TSX if they both hit a vital organ or massive veins....

However on a marginal shot the more expensive "hunting bullet" the one designed to be devastating, creating massive wound channels, and shok will out perform a simple BTSP.

First you need to make sure the bullet you choose will pattern worth a crap with your gun, because if you miss with either bullet that animal aint gonna die.

Then if you have a few different bullets that shoot well out of your rifle I will most likely pick a "premium bullet" for my main hunting rifle... but if its just to shoot yotes I am quite fine saving 15 bucks and shooting a btsp.

Those are the factors as they pertain to me.... they are different for a whole bunch of folks though... In the end its your gun, your ammo, and your hunt.

demand on ALL reloading items and ammo (primers, brass, bullets, powder, etc...) is through the roof , thus the high prices on everything . Gonna be like this for a while , another 6-9 months, maybe longer

since the market is controlled by supply & demand, sellers can set the price and buyers will often pay current market value

Yes, there is a difference. I have several rifles that like core lokts. But shootin paper and shootin animals are two different things. Ive had core lokts come completely apart when they hit an animal. No penetration. No exit wound. Yes i killed the animals but if they would have ran, i had no exit wound and no blood trail.

If u pay the shipping, ill send u 10 rounds of 130 grain fusion. Aint got a 270 no more so i dont need the bullets.

I've had the exact same experience. For this reason I can't take em hunting. A lot of members here swear by them... But I've had very poor results with them not staying together. Retention is key.

I've been thoroughly impressed by Sierra's game king... They are devastating.

Also I like Nosler's accubond and ballistic tip.....

Those 3 bullets can do some serious work.

NO Corelockts for me either, and yeah they do shoot good on paper. If I was buying factory rounds for hunting I'd buy Federal premium with the Trophy Bonded bullets, Nosler Accubonds or Barnes Tripple Shocks for moderate ranges. I have seen the Ballistic tips come apart too many times to have alot of faith in them, for longer ranges they work great and will still expand at the slower velocities. Bottom line is there is not one perfect bullet for all conditions. Just my .02...........

Ok dont go with corelokts then lol! I don't shoot them because I don't like the way they shoot in my guns. I shoot mostly Hornady match ammo or Barnes vortexes or the Winchester power max for pigs.

Like mentioned above ive heard good things about the fusions as well

There are as many different kinds of bullets as people with opinions out there. Which ever bullet you decide on, just keep in mind, with bullets you get what you pay for, there is a reason why corelokt is one of the least expensive you can buy. I recomend asking around to find someone in your area that reloads 270 and talk to them about loading for you.

There isnt anything wrong with a 130 grain powerpoint. It will kill a deer just as dead as anything else. I shoot premium bullets myself, but dont let anyone fool you into thinking you need a premium bullet.

I've killed a load of deer with corelokts. However, since I've started reloading I spring for Sierra game kings or Nosler ballistic tips depending on the gun. Those two are awesome bullets and do shoot noticeably more accurate in my experience. For 100-150 yards and deer the power points are just fine
