    A childs first shots...

You only get to do it once. I always enjoyed taking my boys out to shoot, but that very first time, when they first discover shooting, it is just special.

Yesterday I took my daughter out for the very first time. I set my 10/22 up just for her, with a cut-down purple stock and a Burris Fastfire to make things as easy for her as I could. She was really, really excited about it, and she did real well! Her form leaves a little to be desired, but honestly the rifle is still a bit too big for her. She just turned 5 in December.

Yesterday form didn't matter though, we will work with that and get it all straightened out. The main thing is that she really had a lot of fun, and wants to go again. We kept it short so she didn't get bored, just shot about 25 rounds. She hit the target every time though, in fact surprised me with how well she did. I think she is going to be a pretty good shot.

That rifle looks factory except for the stock, but in reality it is nowhere close. Everything in it has been reworked and polished, with a very crisp 3lb trigger. Barrel has been re-crowned, and the chamber end cut back and re-chambered with a match reamer. With the right ammo it is capable of running 4, 5-shot groups in a row with a 1/4" average at 25 yards.

Cool rifle and great times! I got to experience that with 5 kids and there's not much to beat it except maybe their first deer hunt.

I have 2 boys that are 17 and 21. It has just been a long time since we did that first time shooting thing.

My middle son, I thought he was going to hyper-ventilate the first time he shot a deer! It was priceless.

Tell me more about the FastFire. Would it be good for hunting with a 10/22 (rabbits/squirrels/people trying to confiscate my weapons)? Is there a specific mount for the 10/22? Pricing? Thanks.

I really like the Fastfire on the 10/22. It is a holographic sight, it just projects a red dot on the little TV-like screen you look through. I originally had it on my 8" Dan Wesson .357 for hunting, but figured it would be the perfect thing for teaching Brecklyn to shoot so I swapped it over.

It mounts on a piece of rail, I just happened to have a weaver base in some of my stuff that fit the mounting holes on the 10/22 just perfect, so that is what I used. Plenty accurate for any of the jobs you just mentioned, and it is really fast on sight acquisition. No sight alignment or messing with eye relief, just put the dot on target and shoot. Really simple. I can even shoot it from my non-dominant side and still hit pretty good. I think it would be great for what you are talking about. It has been a few years since I bought it, but I think it was about $175 or $200.

When I was sighting that rifle in, it put 10 shots in a dime-sized hole at 15 yards, and I wasn't shooting off a bench. I was just standing, resting the rifle against the edge of a building, and not being especially careful. Accuracy with it is good. it's not an Eotech, but not a piece of junk by any stretch either. I like it because it is really nice and compact.

Thanks for the info. I've had a scope on mine before but I'm looking for something lighter.

Hey Chew, have you ever thought about Tech Sights?

They make a pretty decent aperture sight (sp.) for 10/22's. I have thought about buying a set of those before too. Kind of military/tacticool looking, but they are supposed to be pretty good.
