    45 Colt Brought to Life

I loaded some 240 gr. Hornady XTP's today for my Ruger Blackhawk and Rossi M92. They clocked 1497 fps out of the pistol and 1710 out of the rifle. I shot an old telephone pole at 25 yards with the rifle and it blew through. The pistol penetrated all the way through exposing part of the bullet. Factory loads tested today penetrated less than half way through the pole. I think this will get a hogs attention this weekend. I am using H110 powder with winchester primers.
The 45 Colt has surprised me with what it is capable of doing in a strong modern firearm.

    Impressive!

300 grain XTP out of my 454 Casull Ruger Super Redhawk clocks 1700fps and just a smudge over 2000fps out of my Rossi.

This is using Alliant 300-MP powder.

This has me thinking about the new chiappa lever gun. It's a 45 colt take down model all stainless with hogue stock with a 16" barrel. Wonder if it would handle a good load.

It would be worth a butt kicking. They are fun guns to play with. Especially when you start customizing them with stuff from www.stevesgunz.com.

I found his site when lookin on the net at them. Definitely would give him some business. Found some when I was in Abilene last weekend and it was tempting not to pull the trigger. Still not sure if it will be 45 or 44 though.

They great guns. For the money I don't think they can be beat.

I like the 45 because you can shoot anywhere from 180 to 350 gr. bullets and there is not enough power difference between them to worry about.

Just bought a pair of 45 LC montados last week. Love em, but can't afford to shoot em. LOL Anybody got a good source for plinking/cowboy type loads/re-loads for the 45 LC?

Not right now. For plinking I load a 255 gr. lead bullet with 7 grains of W231, total cost is .14 per round.

Be sure to check your brass after a couple reloads. The bases aren't as thick as .44's and the primer pocket is usually the first thing to go or the case will get a little split about a 1/16" from the base.

I used to load some hot stuff for a Ruger and killed several deer with it. They are bad dudes.
