What base and rings for my R700 308?

I'm wanting to build a low budget long range rifle, if that is even possible, to take for hogs, maybe whitetail eventually... I picked up a new R 700 SPS Varmint .308 last week on a trade and want to get a 0 moa or 20 moa base... I'm guessing 0 moa since I doubt I'll be shooting over 600 yds. Zero will be at 200 yds. I don't know anything about long range builds, so keep that in mind.

What do y'all long range shooters recommend? Not trying to buy the best, just something good/decent. This rifle won't be getting a lot of use. I'm thinking of picking up another Zeiss 4.5-14x44 or should I put something with a mildot on there to make it easier for this newb?

Long term... I'd eventually like to swap out the the stock and move to a DM...

    Thanks guys!

I'm no pro but the opinion is free so take it for what it's worth lol.

Larue base 0 or 20 moa. Burris xtreme tactical rings. They work very well. Rock solid. Reasonably priced. The base is $75 and the rings vary $50-70 Depends on where you buy.

trophy8 - Lol! That's exactly the info I'm looking for! I have one set of the Burris Xtreme Tact. rings on my AAC-SD and like them. I'm leaning that way, but my wrist gets tired of tightning all 12 screws! I like the 4 on each ring, but the 6, to me, is a little excessive.

      opinions folks!??

Just finished another 308 a few weeks ago. I went with a Larue base and Badger rings. It shoots pretty good.

Might check out the Leupold PRW and Warne Maxima rings. I've had good luck with both and they're reasonably priced.

              Randy - Nice!! I'll give'm a look!

Thanks J-Mac, I'll give those a look as well.

Skullworks52 - Obviously I'd really prefer to keep it to a minimum since I can find what I want in the $700 ballpark.

I'm running an EGW 20moa base on my rifle (same as yours) and like it just fine. They make them in aluminum and steel, I went with aluminum to save a few bucks, but if I had it to do over, I would go with the steel for more rigidity. Aluminum isn't a problem, the rifle shoots lights out as is, but more rigidity is never a bad thing, in rifles, or other parts of life where things should be stiff. I'm using a Vortex Viper scope in Vortex tactical rings (30mm). They are similar to the Burris extreme in that they have 6 screws per ring and are VERY SOLID.

When you get down to shooting your rifle, buy a box of Hornady TAP 168gr shells and try them out. My gun puts them into one hole....I hate to say all day, but as long as I do my part, the gun does its part.

ETA: I went with the 20moa base, even though I don't really need it right now. My thought process was this: I'm not planning to shoot past 600 yards right now, don't have a place to do it, nor the time to invest in practice, but someday, maybe I will. The 20MOA doesn't effect your 100 or 200 yard zero as long as your scope has enough adjustment, which it should, it just gives you more range to adjust up.

Ok, I ended up getting the EGW 20 moa base and some TPS medium rings... I have to put the LR scope on the backburner right now, but I can atleast do some shooting with my Zeiss 4.5-14x44....

What scopes are yall folks running?

I just bought a LaRue rail for my Remington 700 AAC about 5 minutes ago. I already have 2 and couldn't see myself going any other direction.

I'll eat crow on my previous vortex statements after taking it longer ranges. Great scope (viper pst) but I sold it and I am buying a leupold mark 4 6.5-20x50 with m1 turrets and the TMR reticle. I'd recommend that or the 6.5-20x50 vx3 LR. Still affordable but fantastic quality. The features on the vortex were great. The glass at longer than 800 yards didn't match the leupold quality. In my eyes anyway.

I'll second the EGW rail and Burris XTR rings. You can get better but that combo is pretty good bang for the buck.
