AR free float forearm question- rifle length on a carbine?

Picking up a 6.8 upper tomorrow that currently is set up with carry handle and standard A2 FSGB. This is going to be strictly a paper punching/ hunting gun. Is it possible to put a rifle length free float forearm on a 16" carbine length gas port upper? Gut says yes. I know of course I will have to get a low profile GB for it. I just don't want to go to the hassle of buying then having to return items.

Yes your correct. Buy a rail with the barrel nut etc. all the hardware needed for mounting

As muley4x4 said, yes it is. I've always wondered why there were so many carbine length handguards. It's awfully short and less area for mounting. Probably it's because there are so many uppers made with a fixed front sight/gas port. If you have the option, get a midlength gas system. There's less recoil impulse.

There several videos on youtube showing how to cut down an A2 style sight and shaping the gas block. Then reblue it and reinstall using same pins. I just did one.
        Very easy to do.

Sounds like he has already bought it so that rules out the midlength idea.

But yes you can add whatever rail you want as long as you change out your FSB for a smaller gas block.. Or chop it up like referenced above..

You can either shave the FSB or replace it with a lo-pro gas block and cover with the rail.

Or you could buy a longer rail with the FSP cut out like I did.

Only problem I've ran into is on a14.5" barrel with a fixed flash hider. It's pinned and welded to make it a legal 16.1" barrel. The flash hider is not removable! This means you can't get your gas block off without grinding/drilling to remove the flash hider.

Do what Mike D did unless you just want to get rid of the A2 gas block.

I went with a MI lo pro gas block and YHM lightweight rifle length rail on my new 6.8 I just built and am real happy with it.

But since you already have the pinned gas block I would keep it and either shave it or go with the rail like Mike's.

What forearm is that? I like the smooth look, but want a short piece of rail on the bottom and left side at the muzzle end. I don't care for the quad rail look when it's not needed. I just need to be able to mount a bipod/ sling attachment point and the occasional flashlight for nighttime swine chasing.

It has points to add rail pieces on both sides as well as the bottom. I just haven't had the need to put them on the sides yet. It uses YHM 3" sections
That rail is a custom made rail from the barrel maker. It's the first one released to the public.
Took 8 months to get it and the barrel

ARP SFR is what it is called. He currently is not making any more rails.
