    School me on the 6.8mm

A buddy of mine just picked up a Bushmaster in 5.56 and a complete upper in 6.8. along with about 400 rounds of 6.8 He got a great deal on the package. He asked me what I know about the 6.8, which is nothing! What can you tell me about it?

Try to think of a 223 necked up to take a 270 bullet...great round, but the 300 blackout is taking over in the ar platform because they can use the same mags as the 5.56 and better subsonic capabilities

IF you start your research you'll see a lot of industy professionals/SME use a 6.8.

Dr. Gary Roberts has proven the 6.8 is the best supersonic round in an AR thru 12.5"-16" barrels.

like Artos mentioned, if you're interested in subsonic supporessed, the 300 BLK is a viable option. In supersonic, the 6.8 is the best round available.

I hope it's worth the hype, I pick up a almost NIB upper tomorow.

Get PRI mags as a lot will jam...the mags expand and get stuck for some weird reason. PRI makes great mags and have a waffle design so you can do a quick visual to tell the difference.

25 round mags are $44.99 so not the cheapest. Once you deviate from 5.56mm or 7.62mm the prices go up on ammo and mags.

The 6.8 is made off the 30 Remington case. Not familar with the AR configuration, but have the caliber in an Encore. Very accurate and pleasure to shoot.

I ran across what I think are a sack of reloaded 6.8 bullets the other day in the collection.. not sure where I acquired them as I don't own one... but they are 223/5.56 brass necked up to something. Not 300 blk but smaller...

What are the specs on the 6.8? I figure thats what they are... but dont recall ever buying them.

                  6.8 is not in a 223 case!
The 6.8 is approx 80% knockdown of a 308 with recoils slightly more than 223.
It was designed to replace the 556 in military apps, but Remington cut the throats wrong and caused pressures to beto high therefore had to back the load down to meet pressure requiremants. That was the old spec barrels. Anything SPEC II is good to go!
The throats were redesigned, now the bullets can be loaded to max efficiency.Optimum length is 16" and the optimum twist rate is 1:11.25"
Mine setup has actually less recoil due to the 12 port brake.
Tons of great info at 68forums.com
I am a huge believer in the 6.8. I have seen what it can do. It is capable of ringing steel at 1000yds.
If anybody is in my area that is on the fence about a 6.8, give me a call. We can put it side by side with a 223/556 out at the range

I'm on the fence about getting a 300 AAC upper and a 6.8 upper for hunting with the AR I just bought when prices even out. Will stay tuned.

The 300 AAC seems to be a hot item now. Ammo is the issue.

Everything I've seen online says the 6.5 Grendel seems to out perform the 6.8.... by all means correct my if I am wrong, but the Gendel can handle more BC bullets, there for fly straighter, further, and retain more energy.

Yeah but I think it's popularity is mainly SBR suppressed applications. I'm curious about it at carbine length and unsupressed.

All is good, but in reality how far is the longest shot? 400 yards is pushing it. I know if I see something I try to get as close as I can unless it is a coyote running away so I will take the shot but most shots are inside 200 yards, many much closer.

If these 1,000 yard shots are taken seems a 7mm STW or something for making crazy long shots. .308 is used for long shots, the 6.8mm, 6.5, or others will shoot that far but wondering how far do most shoot?

A herd of hogs in a field 500 yards away are fair game but for deer, someone will want to make a well placed shot. Usually study the deer to make sure it is a good one to shoot, or just grabbing meat then does are within 100 yards.

True...the big bullet does go slow. A 5.56mm suppressed is amazingly quite and those are not sub sonic rounds either.
