    Fixed Power or Low Variable

My son claimed one of my new aquisitions-Ruger 99/44 Carbine. I'd like to scope it for him. Looking to see what ya'll recommend. I'd either be putting a low power variable like a 2-7x33 Leupold or 2-7x35 Vortex Diamondback or a fixed Leupold 4x. My son is 8 right now, and this will be his "other" rifle if he doesn't want to take out the Encore. I'm torn between the 2, and before I start searching for a used one or a new one at a decent price, I'd like to hear some thoughts. Max range is 100 yards, and most likely load is a Hornady or Winchester 240gr bullet out of a 16" barrel. Quoted fps is 1200 out of a standard pistol barrel.

K.I.S.S. 4x fixed is more than enough for 100 yards. The wider field of view than the 5-7x magnifications, all else being equal, is why- easier target acquisition, one less thing to worry about before the shot.
