    Question for you varmint hunters?

Me and my son set up Friday night to try and call in a coyote or any other predator using a baby cottontail from my fox pro that would come to the call. After about 30 minutes of calling we heard something coming in. My son turned the light on and it turns out it was a coon. I'm new to the game so I would like to ask the experienced predator hunters. Is this coincidence or does coons come in to finish off something dying?

Skinner Right now for coyote hunting it is mating season so the best calls to use to call them in would be pup distress, female invitation howl, and maybe a challenge howl, coyotes right now aren't too interested in food because of it being mating season

Prior to marriage and when I varmint hunted a lot a few years ago, we pretty much ran the light every sec the caller was on. When you do see a set of eyes, raise the beam above the eyes and keep it on them. It also seemed we had the best luck with the Yellowhammer Woodpecker. There are some videos called "Coming to the Call with Byron South" that will give you some great advice.

Coon is looking for a meal it's common, hope u had been running the light more than just when y'all heard the coon! We hardly ever turn the light off! Just keep it somewhat above them when they are comming in just so u can see the glow off there eyes..

Coons will come to a varmint call. So will badgers.

Thanks for the input. It sounds like I made mistakes with the use of the light and call selection.

Vary the volume, keep the light on skimming the ground, yellowhammer woodpecker fantastic call, and coons are frequently called in.
