Getting bbs out of shotgun shell?

The thread about being out of bbs for the red ryder got me to thinking, I wonder if you could take a steel or lead shot bb shotgun shell cut it open and use those in your red ryder? What would be the possible downsides of doing this?

That what I am thinking. The shot size for a double b aka bb shotgun shells is the same size as a bb gun hence the name and not bbb or T or 1. But I wonder if the softer lead or harder steel would make a difference?

This is true, but if you had to have bbs in a pinch I wonder if it would work?

Youngster, I used to go walking down the street picking up empty Coke bottles, and I'd take them to the neighborhood store and trade them for BBs for my Daisy BB gun.

So you couldn't use the bb out of a shot shell. We have missed name the bb gun apparently it needs to be .5 and not bb since it sits squarely in between the two.

Yes it was meant as a joke, but with all of this panic buying it may very well be the darn truth.
