Any/All thoughts about the .17HMR

Is it smart to use one as a primary hog gun? Do they make bullets specifically for penetration? Can it be used for body shots on smaller pigs? (Less than 50 pounds). My application would limit shots to 25-30 yards, and I'm curious if a 17 hmr would work.Last edited by 30-30; 02-19-2013, 10:02 PM.

It shoots cloverleafs @100 yards. I've yet to kill anything with it. But depending on how loud it is suppressed it may be setting in the blind with me soon picking off those pesky eurasians.

I'm not seeing any "ya, it's ok". It seems it's either the greatest rimfire ever or not worth buying. I'm debating getting one myself or going with something else like a .22 Mag or waiting for the new .17 WSM which is the new rimfire coming out. So, is it really got the energy to deal with sod poodles, yotes, etc at 200-300 yards or is that a pipe dream and it should stick to plinking?

I love mine. My 7 year old has been using it at the range and he loves it.
This is his 1st trip shooting at 30 yrds.
This is this past Sunday at 100 yrds.
Not bad for his first 2 trips. I was planning on him using it on hogs for our spring break trip to the ranch, but while we were at the range this weekend, I picked up a youth .243. I will have the .17 with me an plan to earhole a few myself.

I know the collared doves are bigger than most birds, but I've shot some small birds with a .17HMR in my younger days, and basically found a wing here and a foot there (still attached to the tree limb), basically the birds just explode.
Ive eaten them before... as well as pigeons.... to me they rank like this:
Dove: Decent
Eurasian: ehh
Pigeom: no thanks
What I really want is those dumb eurasians to do is die. They eat an entire spin of corn before anything else can come... dang birds. Im ready for em.. then maybe a bobcat will stroll through looking for freshly exploded bird

I'll most likely get a .17wsm after they come out. I'm gonna wait a year or two after the relase to see how it holds up and wait for the availiblity to come back. I suspect they'll be a hot ticket item for a bit. I have high hopes for it.
