257 Roberts ? for the Reloading Gurus

I got Tatum a 257 Roberts in a Ruger M77 Hawkeye. Has a high end Nikon scope also but hates the Hornady ammo off the shelf. My question is any of you guys reload them and how hot do you go. Since ammo is so short I am setting up my reloading benches and looking to set up a good round for her. I have an entire metal ammo can each of 270 300 win mag. 257 Roberts and 223 so might as well make some.use of them right.

    Any help would be appreciated.

My .257 ackley loves the 117 gr. hornady SST and they are lethal. I am getting right at 3,000 fps with a pretty hot load start a few grains off max and work up till you get the performance you want

I have a warm load using N165 & 120gr pills...plenty of recipes out there in the manuals. Great round!!

Like all new loads, work your way up watching pressure.

I have a Winchester Model 70 Featherwight in .257 Roberts. Don't you EVER shoot it cuz once you do you're hooked. You won't want to shoot anything else. Mine loves Nosler 100 gr. Ballistic Tips over a max charge of IMR 4350. I also get outstanding groups and velocity out of 90 gr. Barnes x bullets. The 90 gr. is no longer made but I can still find some on Gunbroker every now and then. Barnes makes an 85 gr. TTSX that should be a real burner but didn't group well enough to suit me. I've also had respectable groups loading the 117 gr. Hornady BTSP and IMR 430. Veocity is not as hig, but that Hornady really thumps them. Experiment, experiment, experiment is all I can tell you.

In my opinion, the 257 Ackley improved version is head and shoulders above the stock 257 Roberts....It's a tremendous whitetail round...sounds like you have yours dialed in properly...I would prefer a bullet other than the Hornady tho...like a Nosler or a grand slam...I want a full pass thru on the deer so if they run I will have a blood trail...

The Ackley is a fine cartridge, I've just never wanted to change the Roberts from its original configuration. With 100 gr. Noslers, either the BT or the Partition, I'm getting 3000 fps and I've never had anything go father than 10 yards when hit at ranges up to 250 yards. Most have gone straight down in their tracks.

I load a 110 gr Nosler Accubond for the same gun and get great performance out of it using IMR 4350.

100gr Nosler Ballistic Tip, 42.5gr 4350, CCI primers. I neck size only and it's wicked accuracte. Ruger #1 and it shoots .3-.4" all day long. Kill deer stone dead.
