why do they call a 30-30 a good brush gun?

I believe it's mostly to do with the short length of the weapon (easily maneuvarable and pointed in the thick stuff) and the heavy nature of the caliber which allows it to stay on target even it hits some brush.

My impression is because it's relatively short and easy to maneuver through brush, and its effective range has been though to be limited to approx 100 yds or so, becoming increasingly difficult to account for bullet drop past that yardage, so hunting in tight cover like the woods or brush country, you might only be able or willing to clear shooting lanes from your stand out to about 100 yds or so. It's not because it excels in shooting through brush to hit game...no gun can do that except a tank or possibly a shotgun w/buckshot, but still unethical IMHO. That's my take on it.

Easily maneuverable (compact) and you have the option of open sights in close tight cover

Oh yeah, forgot the open sights part too. Good call, CB.

                Right on the head.

All of the above. I've shot deer out to 200 yards with my 30-30's. People always say a 30-30 isn't good for past 100 yards, but that is an ignorant statement because I have proven it wrong many times. PAST 200 YARDS, it drops quick. And for you non believers, I shoot 150 grain bullets. Go to the range and test my theory!

Just to add to that, my lever action .44 mag is a hail of a gun out to 300 yards.

Probably because that's about all it's good for - short distance shooting. It's not a good long range rifle.

Would that be "Hail Mary" ???due to the drop of the 44 mag. cartridge at 300 yards???????Zeroed at 100 yards ,it only drops 63.8 in.[out of a 20 in.barrel]

Got one 16 years ago and still drop deer with it. I have many other hunting rifles but love my old Marlin 30-30 for the woods.
