Best Long Range .308 rifle under $1K....options?

I am looking at the Savage 10 FCP and the Savage 10 LE with the 24" muzzle break barrel.

Which is the better gun and which one will shoot accurately out past 600yrds.

Any other options out there in this price range?
.308 is the only caliber I am interested in.

Lots of options under $1000! Savage make a ton of different 308 platforms. Remington 700 makes a ton also. Pick the one that fits your needs best. I bought the savage fp sr and changed the stock. Got the gun for alittle over $600 and the stock for $230. It will out shoot me all day long! Good luck! If I could have found one I would have bought the fcp sr. It got detachable mags and the accustock.

I have a Remmy 700 SPS Varmint, would not hesitate to shoot it out that far. Holds sub moa groups. Lot of great comments about this rifle on Sniperhide

Rem 700 5r milspec for around 1k maybe a little more. i can shoot 1/4" 5 shot groups @100 and 3" groups out at 600.

Are you going to reload? Reloading can help any rifle with accuracy

That is a sweet gun. The 10rd detachable mag is very appealing too!

There isn't really a answer to that question. One of the most precise rifles I have ever seen is a buddy of mine's Ruger M77 Stainless Synthetic. I also know guys with high end Kimbers and Dakotas are that nothing special. I personally have a Remington M700 ADL in 7 Rem Mag and it is a legit 1/2MOA rifle with Winchester cheapo 140gr soft points. I bought it off a guy for $300 bucks when he was cash strapped. I bought a box of shells one afternoon since I didn't have time to make any loads and it was scary. Went back and bought 9 boxes that were the same lot #.

My dad just bought a Savage Hog Hunter in 308 and it was shooting 2" groups last weekend at 300yd using Privi Partisan 150gr FMJ !

I would say that in general 99% of the rifles being built today could be classified as "long range rifles" if you are going to reload. Also, good glass, good rings/bases, and a good trigger will make a world of difference. Alot of what folks consider "long range" rifles just look cool and aren't really any better than an off the shelf M700.

Also want to add that there is no reason to have a 24" barrel on a 308 shooting 600 yards you will be just fine! Lots of guys shooting out to 1000 with the 20"!

I was going to say that the shooter has a lot more to do with a gun being "long range" than the gun. Good equipment is important but if you don't know how to use it, a $2000 custom gun is not going to make you a great shooter. A good trigger however can help improve a marginal shooter's ability.

For your $1,000 price range, are you looking for an 'out of the box' weapon that's ready to go or do you plan on investing money in stock & trigger too?

I prefer out of the box.....as long as the stock let's me get a good cheek weld.....the accu-triger seems very nice to me.

Sure, but for the same price as a 20"......why not the 24" with the break?

This is all new to me ....Ftr...this is just gonna be a hobby, no contest for me
