    280 AI twist rate?

Dropped off my action today and got the build started but having trouble deciding between 1-10 or 1-9 twist.

I think most of my shooting will be 140g but I want the ability to do some long range work with the heavier Berger's. The 168g Berger can shoot at 1-10 but the 180g need 1-9.

    Opinions please!

Rifle is Rem 700, #4 Schneider barrel, H-S stock, Rifle Basix trigger, and Leupold glass.

Try contacting Artos, he shoots a 280 AI and try Rubydog

the 280 AI truly shines and was meant to shoot 140 - 168 gr pills

i personally would waste my time shooting the 180's

if you want to shoot 180's step up to the 300 WM

          140's will be your poison

Thanks Blake. That is pretty much what I was thinking.

Is there a down side to the faster twist or is it just not necessary?

              I have a 280 AI with a 1:9. It works for stabilizing everything up to a 180gr.

The 140 accubonds, 168 vld and 162 amax are top performers in this cartridge.

What is the draw back to going 1:9 if 1:10 will work? Seems like insurance that I can shoot any bullet from 140 - 180.

Sweet rig J.B. Mine will be very similar except not backwards handed and it will wear Leupold glass.

Just saw this thread. So what did you go with?

I'm shooting a standard 280 in a Cooper mod 52 with a 1:9 twist and it shoots 140-160 very well. I haven't shoot any Berger 168 yet but shoots ther 140 from hsm to .5. It consistently shoots the Fed trophy bonded 160 to .3 or less.

Only thing I would change or consider would be a Jewell Trigger. I have a Lilja 27" barrel in a 1-10 twist and shoots 140 Nosler Accubond less than 1/2" groups at 100 yds. Had Jewell trigger installed last and ruined me now all my other guns triggers feel like mush.
