Test set of 270 win reloads

Well I have worked out my first 20 of my test loads to find a load for my rifle. So I all need to go do is test my 270 win test group and see which of the five groups are going to work best for me & my rifle. Tomorrow I should be going to the range.

    Pictures to follow

Savage 200 model 270 win, I am using hornady sst 270 cal 150 gr bullets and I have five loads using hodgdon h100v powder my loads are 49gr, 49.5gr, 50gr, 50.5gr, and 51gr with cci primer. Each are marker for their group and powder weight and have a note pad with my information to match up.

I pay more attention to overall length as that relates to "bullet jump" or the distance the bullet moves before it engages the lands. That has been the most important factor in working up the most accurate load for any given rifle. Did this type of work for my gunsmith buddy for 10 years, and on my own too-I also do a full accuracy prep of each case as well.

I am looking for the best load at 100 yards because that the furtherest I will have to shoot. I was using factory load 130 gr and it was all over the place. So I am looking for a load that handles well at 100 yards. I know factory loads of 150 gr workthe because for my rifle. Just need a good day to go to the range to shoot.

I am hoping tomorrow it will be a good day to shoot. Wanted to get h1000 powder but it was out of stock this h100v should be a good powder.

That's a little scary to read.
At 100 yards you should have some kind of group.

I'm hoping your problems aren't your scope and rings.

A good solid rest is as important as the proper load. Pulled or jerked shots will have you chasing your tail no matter what the load.

Good luck with your reloads, if they start out "all over the place" I'd step back and consider other factors before burning up too much precious ammo.

I have the same rifle. I found that 130gr. Sierra boat-tail with RE-22 powder works great. 3/4" groups at 100yds. Don't have my reloading data sitting in front of me to tell you exactly how much powder.

Yes it was crazy was a reason I missed a deer. I had a solid rest and everything miss like crazy. I went to the range and it was the bullet and grain. It looked like I had a shotgun I could get two every five bullets group together. I later tried heavier grain with great groupings that why I decide to load my own I would know what I my bullets should do. My rifle like heavy bullets it stay solid but a light bullets it will jump and move.
