    .45ACP JHP question

What gr. bullet would you recommend? 185, 200, 230?? And why on each. School me on the differences. I know the lighter is faster and the heavier has more ft/lbs but in a defensive situation would you want more ft/lbs to maybe penetrate heavy clothing or the lighter gr. load to reduce recoil in maybe getting a faster 2nd/3rd shot.
I'm looking at some Corbon 200gr + P (and it's in stock too!!). 200gr., best of both worlds??
Or does it really matter other than what works accurately... This will be out of my primary STI 1911 commander (and also a Ruger P90) pistol if that matters.

Honestly, you should try multiple different kinds and see which one feeds through your weapon and which one you like best.

The difference between 185-230gr isn't really going to make that much difference to the person you are shooting because they are in your house.

Nothing wrong with .45ACP ball over hollow point except the hollow point will generally put a wider hole and therefore have a better chance of clipping an artery.

Or more simply, a 0.75 inch wide hole probably has a better chance of hitting that artery or heart than a 0.45 inch wide hole.

I do understand "not worried about accuracy" in a self defense situation some what (CQC). I also don't want to have to think about with a particular load being "off" a little. I want, and will try many, so that I am confident that when I draw and point the bullet will hit where I intend. Last thing I want to do, after ever having have to draw and shoot, is hitting someone other than my intended target.
I'm just curious if there are any big advantages/disadvantages to bullet weight. From an experienced shooters perspective.

I have carried ball ammo before because it shot exceptionally well out of a gun. My concern there is over penetration and hitting a good guy...

In a handgun, with differences that close, there really aren't any major advantages that I'm aware of at close range.

Too many arguements on either side. It's really not that big of a deal.

Use a Hollow Point ammo? As to not worry about penetration issue...I'm not an expert but I shoot .45 and its my carry gun. I use HP when I carry.

I say find what your auto likes. And what you are comfortable with, and have the most confidence in. Mine likes a certain shaped 185+P Winchester . But it's not something to feed a steady diet of.

Sounds to me like you know your way around the 45 offerings. I my self carry the 185's for the follow up shot and reduced penetration preference in case there are good guys standing around. To; try a few of everything and see what you like best.

I'm not sure of your comment. JHP would be my preferred bullet. But I intend to try a couple of test this spring, if possible, of both a JHP vs. a FMJ .45 on some hogs. We are getting them back and they would prove a worthy adversary for a test...

My bad. I re-read your post and I mistakenly your ? To be a ball ammo but you initially said HP. Scratch what I said.

Mike 45ACP was designed to shoot 230 grain ammo. Every penetration test I have ever seen with lighter loads does not meet FBI minimum penetration requirements.
