    Building a long range gun

Ok gun gurus! Question, I have 2 rifles that I am considering having rechambered and built into a LR setup.

    #1 is a a Winchester Model 70 in 30-06

    #2 is a Ruger M77 Hawkeye in 7mm Mag

Which is my best choice and what calibers cold these be bored into?

Also, who would be a good smith in the Austin area to do the work?

    Lots of questions I know!

    Thanks!

And as far as cal, if you reload there is a ton of options. The 06 if rebarrel to a 6.5x284 Norma and 7mm I'd just have it trued and rebarreled in 7mm

in order to do it right the first time, this is what you will have to do to either of your aforementioned factory rifles:

          - true/blueprint action $125
          - Jewell trigger $200
          - upgrade to a LR profile stock .... used HS $225 , new McM or Manners $450 to 1000
          - skim bed HS stock $100 , pillar glass bed stock $200
          - select match grade bbl ... $350 (add $125 for fluting)
          - chamber , thread, crown barrel onto action $200

you would have invested $1200 + to build a LR rig on a factory action

my suggestion, sell both factory rifles for @ $525 each and apply that $1050 to a custom action, and build from there

here would be the the breakdown

          Stiller action $900
          stock $200 - 450
          Jewell - $200
          bbl - $350
          chamber - $200
          ADL hardware $45 , BDL $65 , DM box $70 - $200+

          min. total would be $1995 - $1050 (rifle sales) = $945

you would have 1 BA custom rifle vs. 1 factory rifle with custom accessories (stock, bbl, trigger)

          just my opinion

Great advise here, the only thing I would add is you can save $400 by using a remington 700 action and I doubt you will see any difference in the accuracy of the gun. Stiller is a remington clone.

I agree with Cajun Blake. Do it right first time. The only other thing not mentioned is whatever you pay for your ELR Gun be willing to pay that same amount if not 2x the amount in glass. Also if you are not currently reloading. Add that to your budget.
