    Interesting .38 spl. loads.

After the .357 mag. thread, I thought I'd make one for ..38 spl. Here's some of mine. First up is the first round up in my snubbies that I have around my house. Speer .38 shot cups. I've always figured if I have to shoot some one in the house, with a shot cartridge I will surely hit them with a few pellets and shake them up pretty good. If in my groggy, half asleep stupor, it's some one I'm not supposed to shoot, they have a split second to scream so I don't shoot them any more and they should survive.

Second and third up is also in shot cups. Years ago I found out that three .30 caliber round balls will fit perfectly in the Speer shot cups. Even in my little S&W chiefs special with the 2" barrel, the pellets stay within a foot or so from each other at 15 yards.

The last 2 in the cylinder are hollow base wad cutters loaded backwards. It is a mild load but devastating on impact. I read about some one doing this way back in the sixties and have loaded thousands of them through the years. Shooting them into wet, clay banks, they will expand to the size of quarters and are only an 1/8" thick when recovered.

Any of you guys have any cool loads for the .38? Click image for larger version

    Cool loads sir!

I'm simple. 4.0-4.5 gr of Unique under a 158 of some kind. With a standard pistol primer. Pending the projectile, can be a very economical load.

About the craziest I have done lately was using a .357 powder charge and loading to 357 COAL in a 38 case.

I was at an indoor shooting range many years ago. The shooter beside me would shoot one time, three holes would appear in the target and I would smell a whiff of plastic.

After that happened two or three times I had to go over and talk to him. Seems he was using snake shot shells with three double buck shot pellets in the capsules.

I wanted to load up some of those, but never did. He said they were a heck of a self-defense inside the house load.

Works pretty good on cotton tails as well.
