    Scope Cerakoted ?

Anybody had a scope cerakoted ? Any problems ? I know they bake them. I have a Ruger SBH Hunter, they only make them in stainless steel. Stainless is great, but I never was a fan of stainless hunting guns. I know I’m going to be cerakoting the gun, but I wonder if I shouldn’t sell the Burris that’s on it and just buy a black scope to take its place.

Don, I have Leupold 2.5-8X handgun scopes on 3 of my hunting handguns. I really like them. they're "shiny" black. Not sure what temp they "bake" the cerakote parts, but that can't be good for a scope with a hermetically sealed interior with the seals it has to prevent the pressurized gas inside it from escaping.

Nope, I don't think it would work. If you decide to do it let us know how it works out.

The guy said he will, but he doesn’t like to. He did say he baked them at a lower temp, but I’m a little leery of it.

I don’t know how it compares with baked on formulas in terms of wear and protection, but I believe Cerakote does make a no-bake formula. Might be worth checking into.

I’ve looked into getting a gloss black scope from these folks before. I’d think if it messed with the scope or warranty, they wouldn’t be selling them and stating “won’t void the warranty”.

Can always shoot them an email and ask any questions. When I was thinking about getting one, I was going to contact whichever scope manufacturer I went with and ask what their input was concerning warranty.

In the end I found a NOS gloss Leupold on EBay that did the trick.

Thanks for the link. On their homepage it looks like they will cerakote a customer scope for $100. That’s cheaper than my guy quoted, of course shipping might put me in the same price range. These folks evidently do it every day though so there’s that.

I used Brownells Alumna Hyde II epoxy based spray paint to give a Leupold VX II a matte look. That be was 5 years ago and still holding up. I just did the same for a Savage Synthetic stock .. looks great. Need lots of preparation and taping certain parts like lenses . Alumna Hyde takes a LOT of patience and time .. the curing time is 10-14 days. Walmart carries it Online and is cheaper than buying it directly from Brownells

I have duracoated a few scopes. Duracoat, while not as durable as cerakote, does not require baking to cure and holds up pretty well

I talked to the guy again that’s going to do the work and he is needing a silver scope for a TC so I think we might do some kind of swap. If we can agree, I’ll just buy a black scope and put on it. Thanks for everyone’s input !

I posed this same question on the Single Action Pro Boards and got a comment on cerakote that makes me not want to do it. He said his revolver looked like it had the measles after awhile. I’m investigating black nitride now. Probably too expensive though.
