Suppressor talk... How many have you gone from a personal/individual to a trust?

How many of yall have gone from a personal/indvidual app to a trust for your suppressors? I bought my first one as an individual on the advice of several, at the time, to get it faster. I probably didn't really think it through and am I'm thinking I should buy all future ones in a trust so they can go to somebody I know, should I leave this world. Has anybody done this and how did it go? I am reading that I'll be needing to pay another $205 to transfer my current one to the new trust. I'm ok with that although it sucks.

I am about to buy a second suppressor and figured that's a good time to start this if favorable. Should I do it as a trust with the names of the folks I plan on putting on it or get it started, get my suppressor and add names later?

I went with a trust from the get-go Jason, although I only own one suppressor. It ain’t IF, but WHEN you leave this world, and it would be easier on all if it could just be passed on with minimal fuss. My two cents.

I formed my trust back in 2014 and back then I didn't have to do fingerprinting, LEO approval, passport photos, etc. Just provide a copy of my trust and that was it. I had a few people as trustees on it as well. The last suppressor I bought though they flagged it and wanted me to submit fingerprints and passport photos for each trustee as well. I contacted the lawyer I used and paid him for an amendment to the trust removing all trustees. It was approved once I submitted my trust paperwork with the amendment in there again. I have what they call a revocable gun trust so I can make changes as I see fit. I used Chris Bass for mine. For what you want to do I'd get a revocable gun trust with no trustees yet, transfer this one to it and yes it'll be the same process you just did application wise and another $200. Once you're done buying everything you want then have an amendment drafted adding the trustees, or have them added from the beginning and make them all get fingerprinted and passport photos taken.

I'm late to the party, just now waiting for the ATF to approve my first Form 4 that was submitted a couple days ago. But after looking at all angles of it, I went with a trust from Jim Willi after seeing several others on here recommend him. His trusts are the most user-friendly gun trusts I looked at. I'm the only responsible person initially until I decide to add a co-trustee. I'll add my wife as co-trustee once my tax stamp is approved and I get to bring my integrally suppressed rifle home so that she'll be legal when she's at home with the NFA gun in the safe while I'm gone. I can add and remove co-trustees any time I need to without going back to Jim for more legal work. He provided all the forms I'll need to do whatever I may ever need to do to amend the trust going forward. And he got the documents to me within hours (closer to minutes) instead of days, weeks or months. I've never had any legal work done by an attorney that was anywhere close to this responsive and thorough. If you decide on a gun trust, I can't recommend Jim highly enough.

Silencer Shop has a trust you can use without a lawyer. It's OK, but not the best. Jim Willi has a trust that you can use without talking to him. It's the same as you get when you talk to him, but it's DIY and not customizable. I didn't end up customizing mine after talking to him, but for a few more dollars, it was worth it for me to talk through everything and get his explanation and help. If you read through the FAQ page on Jim's website it will answer lots of your questions and probably some questions you didn't even think to ask.

the one Shane mentioned above seems pretty painless though. I paid the guy I used around $300 I think and when I received my documents I just had to go get them notarized. I'm not familiar with the silencer shop trust if its a revocable or irrevocable trust. But an irrevocable trust won't allow you to make any kind of changes from what I understand and you don't want that.

I used Jim Willi also. Seamless and headache less. Worth every nickel to make sure it went right.

I second Jim's work. He took my old Sean Cody "train wreck trust" & corrected it. He also sells several different suppressors so it can be a "one stop shop". Also this is his main specialty so that reassured me greatly.

Once I finish buying a couple more, I too am going to bite the bullet and swap them all to a trust and put a couple people on it. No one really borrows my suppressors, so a trust has never been something I was worried about. I took the quicker turn around option.

Planning on building a new hunting rifle for my dad to use, and it will be intended to be suppressed. So I will get a can for it when I do, and at that point will get on the Trust Train so he can be in possession of the can.

I'm a newbie in this game but based on what little research I did unless you are going to go ape chit and buy a bunch of them the trust is not needed. I'm sure people that know a bunch more than I do on this subject will disagree and that is okay. My wife & girls have no interest in them so upon my departure from this world they will be sold and it should be fine. I have two and that is all that I plan to ever have, if that changes I will likely rethink this.

As an individual you can will your suppressor to anybody you want and it will be tax free. They will have file a form with the atf.. Look at 9.5.3 and 9.5.3.1

I have never used a lawyer on any of my suppressors, SilencerShop and SilencerCo make it super easy for me to do the paperwork.

For another topic, but who actually checks any of this documentation when you own the supressor?

It doesn't really have anything to do with how many NFA items you own. It has more to do with who can legally be in possession of them. If you own them individually and then you die, your wife and/or kids can't even be in possession of them, much less sell them. If you have them in your house now and you're not at home, your wife is technically in possession of them illegally if she's home - even if you only own 1 suppressor and that's it. A trust can easily solve those problems.

My first was an individual & had the Sheriff sign off...he was actually a family friend & we chatted for an hour or more when I took in the paperwork. He ended up in jail, but that's for another story.

I only paid $200 for the can so It's not really worth moving it over to the trust.
