    .30-06 barrel length experience?

I am considering doing some modifications to an old Remington 700 in .30-06, specifically replacing the stock and having the barrel cut and threaded. The original barrel is 24", too long for using a can.

Has anyone here had a .30-06 cut down to 18" or 20"? If so, how does it shoot? What ammo does it like at that length?

    I’d think a 30-06 at 18-20” would be about the same as a 308.

I cut mine down to 18”. Haven’t ever chrono’d it but it shoots good. It’s only been fed handloads, but it does dang good with anything from 110gr to 180’s. The hog in the pic was shot with either a 110 vmax or a 120 speer varmint.

agreed leave the 06 as it is,, cutting it down will basically just turn it into a long action 308,, just heavier with no benefit,,, might even be a bit slower than a 308

Cut it and use it. 24” is too long without a can.
You might lose a few feet per sec, but you also lose muzzle blast, overall weight and recoil with a good can.

maybe, but then again it likely wont be used at all now since it's not threaded.

Remington used to make a carbine 30-06 in the pump and semi auto with a 18 in. barrel. I always thought they were more accurate than the long barrel version. Cut and thread it, put on the can, and enjoy. Or sell it and buy a 308. Either way will work, and nothing you shoot will know that the bullet could be going faster in a longer barrel. Bullets don't generally bounce off.

I thought about going this route but there is practically no market for an old 700 ADL, especially in .30-06

Does it have a synthetic stock?. I took an old “plastic” ADL and added a wooden stock with nicer pad for my family. They killed a bunch of deer and pigs with that cheap gun.

No reason for a Texas deer rifle to not carry a suppressor and be chopped to a 18” barrel or less IMHO. I am not talking about expensive rifles or heirlooms.

that’s exactly what mine started as. A $150 pawn shop gun that looked like it had spent considerable time in the pickup.

I’ve only got about $900 in it now🤣 but it has been the
                    killing-est rifle I’ve ever had.

Quick breakdown, and I’m sure the numbers are off somewhere, but the point stands lol:

                    Rifle: $150
                    Stock: $200
                    Scope/base/rings: $250
                    Trigger: $150
                    Barrel chop/thread/muzzle device $150

All the fun you’ll have: Priceless

Yeah, it’s a synthetic stock. I’m going to replace it with a Magpul
