    Reloading 308

Ive been reloading 308 for a while with 44gr. of Varget for a 165gr. Nosler Balistic Tip. I have a friend of a friend that swears hes pushing it to 3000 fps with a 165 gr bullet and I know he has a Garmin chronograph but I have no idea hows hes getting that kind of speed out of a 308. do any of yall have a recipe with a similar fps?

    I don't believe your friend. I don't think you can get 3000 out of a 30-06 with a 165gr bullet.

I'm calling BS as well. He may get 2800, but he ain't gettin' 3K.

Finally heard back from his friend and he says its 2800 which is much more believable.

Give CFE 223 a go. It meters quite well and the SD velocities are low as heck.

I’ve been using 44 grains of Varget with a 165 grain Corelokt bullet for 20 years, and though I’ve never chronied it, I know beyond a shadow of a doubt it ain’t running 3k fps. I’m also loading 44 grains of Varget with a 110 grain bullet, and it’s probably running at least 3k. All I do know is that it’ll drop a coyote like a hot rock.

been using 43.8 of vgt on 168smk and 175smk for years .. 26" barrel a little over 2700 ... 2800 seems plausible with a little more powder and lighter bullet..

Whatever you do, don't borrow his chronograph.

I get 2850fps pushing 168gr ELD-M over PP2000mr can't remember how many grains I'll have to look at my data at home. PP2000mr was definitely a significant jump over varget when I load tested years ago from what I remember for that rifle. It's a 20" proof research carbon barrel

                    It could probably be done…

My 165 loads were running around 2750-2800 if I remember right and they 100% were a little hot.

165 grain at 3000 fps??? 🤔 Maybe so, but that brass will be completely shot.

I load a TTSX 130gr with CFE223 and get 3030 fps, which is a very compressed load. I find it hard to believe a 165 could hit 3k in a 308.

Interesting. I am loading .308 with the same bullet but 150gr with 44 gr Varget and its running 2710 fps

You can absolutely push a 308 to 3000fps and beyond.

Oh no doubt. I push the same Nosler BT to 3110 in 125 gr out of my bolt gun. Just question 165 gr reaching it safley and especially with 44 gr of Varget.
