Axis Hunting troubles.

I have a buddy that I reload for and he shoots a lot of axis at his place with a 308. They always die however they do not make make a passthough and no blood trail because of it. He's wanting more and trying different bullets with max powder loads but haven't found anything that does it yet. I personally don't believe the 308 has enough power behind it to do what he wants but he wont listen. So far we have tried 165gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip, Accubond, and now about to send him out with some partitions. Anyone else have a recommendation on a bullet to use that has experience with it? I know FMJ will most likely make a passthough but not known for an ethical kill.

Surprised the Accubonds didn’t exit Partitions should work well. I have used quite a few different bullets in 30/06 I can’t think of any that didn’t exit. Last one I shot was with 243 and a Hornady Interlock behind the shoulder and got an exit.

Although I’m really doubting any decent bullet in a 308 won’t blow through an axis at normal hunting ranges.

Hes shooting 100-200 yards. Has no trouble with a passthough on whitetail just Axis.

You could try Barnes TTSX or TSX

308 has plenty of power for pass thrust on an axis. Hig shoulder shot will drop them right there.

Heart and Lung, typically still going about 60 yards in the West Texas brush.

In addition to the bullets others mentioned, you could go up to a 180 grain for a little more penetration. Axis can be thick, I've had them soak up magnum rounds with no exit more times than not.
