I have a Western Field bolt action 30/30 and I had a Texas Ranger single barrel 12 gauge. Not sure which stores sold them but both of my grand-paws gave them to me along with several other firearms. I’d say 90% of my collection came from my dad and grand-paws. I’m 47 and they’re all older than me.
I think Western Field was a Ward’s offering, and I imagine the 30-30 was made by Savage-Stevens since they are the only ones that made a bolt action 30-30 that I know of. The single barrel was probably one of those thousands I mentioned before. I have seen dozens of them, different brands, some with no brands, all decent guns in their time. Daddy’s old 12 gauge was the first shotgun I ever shot and if he gave me five shells he expected five squirrels !
Honestly, as far as the gun itself is concerned, it’s probably just a run of the mill single shot that some company built for some store back in the day. Probably was a cheap buy back then and it got the job done. Nothing wrong with that at all!
The heirloom aspect is kick *** though. I’d have it checked out by a gunsmith (or just shoot it myself—but I like a challenge) and try to shoot a few birds next season.
Looks like the H&R That I bought with proceeds from my first "job" when I was 13 YO. I'm 69 now. 20 ga. And I also have a 30-30 barrel for it, acquired later in life. No serial # and I did not have to have an adult with me to buy it. Was bought from a pawn shop, and was a new firearm.
