Winchester Power Point for nilgai ?

Anyone have experience, factory loaded 180grn Winchester Power Point .30.06 tough enough for nilgai ?

I've used 150 grain power points for years without issue. The 180 grain loads are designed for larger game than the white tails which. I wouldn't hesitate using them on anything in North America. As with any caliber, you must put it in a vital spot!

If that was your only option, neck, base of neck or high shoulder.

Otherwise I’d get a Barnes or Partition.

From what I read online those should work just fine. Did not know what a PP was at first but after some reading it is a good design similar to a lot of other bullets that have been proven for decades.

If you’re shooting a 30-06 there are a lot of better choices in factory ammo. Barnes TTSX, Federal Terminal Ascent, Trophy Copper. Only thing I will say is that if you switch to mono bullets after shooting lead core make sure you get a good copper remover and clean your barrel good before swapping over.

I would be using Nosler Partitions in 180gn in an 06. Thats what we used in Africa with great success on all kinds of animals, including wildebeest, Kudu, Zebra and more.

A factory 180gr 30-06 meets the criteria for good nuff. Sometimes those “better” choices don’t even perform as good but they are still good nuff.

I’d be looking for accubonds or partitions. I’m a huge advocate for accubonds. I dumped a bull elk with one from a short 308 at 320 yards

Definitely will do the job. Killed 4 cows and a bull with them.

For the boiler room a small cow would be fine, but I personally wouldn't plug a large bull using conventional cup / core pills if it could be avoided...I would feel more confident going for an ear hole shot w/ a 220 swift than what could very well be a difficult track.

Too many stories about great shots with the uber mags and still running.

                      Can they work? Absolutely.

But why take the chance? My wife shoots Hornady 150gr SP’s out of her .308 for most everything we hunt. When she had the opportunity to hunt a Nilgai a few years ago, I bought two boxes of Barnes TSX’s for the same caliber and it was one shot and done.

They're tough enough to appreciate the extra insurance.
