    AR10 - what caliber?

I was given an AR10 lower. I don’t know much about them. Any suggestions on caliber for upper? It is my understanding I can go with 243, 6.5cm, or 308. Any suggestions on manuf for a good upper?

.308 is the easiest answer. Lots of factory ammo choices from subsonic to hunting rounds. Puts the hurt on pigs and deer.

As far as manufacturers it depends on your budget. JP rifles is my Holy Grail for accuracy and dependability. What do you want to use it for?

I have a Ruger SFAR 16" barrel that i run a Can and thermal on as my pig gun. I wanted a short barrel to limit overall length. I also wanted the lightest upper. Accuracy 2" @ 100yds is good enough for where I am hunting, Max 200yd shots.

I have one in .308 & another in 6.5 Creedmore. They both shoot great and are very pleasant to shoot. You can't go wrong with either, but if I was going to choose just one, it would be a .308

First thing you need to do is determine if you have an AR10 or LR308 lower. I've had 308's and 6.5 Creeds. I still have the creeds.

Also 270, 30-06, 45-70 22-250, and 8.6 black out, lots of caliber choices for this lower. I'm building a 8.6 blackout. Essentially a necked up 6.5 to 338. Going to a Hog thumper. What are you wanting to do with the rifle? Primary use?
link has some good info on caliber choices.

I have a 16" upper in .338 Federal that delivers DRT shots every time on deer. Also have an 18" upper in .308. Both shoot better than I do and are great for hunting.

McGowan and Faxon barrels have worked out great for me.

Definitely confirm whether your lower is AR10 or LR308 before buying an upper... they're different!

Figured out I have a LR308 lower. Does that change your opinion? Already have a 270 and 30.06 bolt action rifle.

Is it for the Zombie apocalypse or for pig / deer hunting?

If for hunting only and not doing mag dumps I'd go 7mm-08 to be unique.

Vampire hunting- .308 for ammo availability.

Whatever you chose, keep an eye on build weight. 10's can get heavy fast.
And therefore end up safe queens.

                        AR-10's don't shoot LA cartridges these days do they?? 270 / 30-06??

308 is really the only reasonable round to consider, especially for resale.

A friend asked me to check out his 308 Armalite & I killed a couple deer with it / was moa, but good gosh it was a boat anchor...if it were me, I would also search out a light weight build for a hunter. If I wanted a 308 battle gun, I would sell the action & get a scar or HK.

My buddy has an AR chambered in 25-06 and BCA offers one in .270 which I think would be pretty sweet to have.

I have one in 7mm-08 nice rifle less recoil than .308.

About half of those you listed won’t fit in an AR-10. That article is BS.
