as i sat here this morning i pondered where did they come up with the gauges for shot guns and i went searching to figure it out and this is what i came up eith you can make 12 balls from a pound of lead that fits the barrel of a 12 gauge 16 that makes a 16 gauge and 20 that makes a 20 gauge funny how simple some things came to be

That’s correct and .410 is obviously a bore diameter. Actually called a .410 bore and not a .410 gauge

I am now 78 and haven’t been dove hunting in about 10 years. Would be interesting - and frustrating - I would bet if I went out again.

Bigger gauge number is actually smaller by ratio.
