    44 Magnum Rifle Ammunition

I've got CVA Hunter in 44 Magnum with a Leupold 2-8 rifle plex scope .. shoots 2 -3" groups at 100 yards but likes heavier 300 grain bullets better than lighter 240 grain bullets

I got some PPU 300 gr soft points and Hornady 300 grain xtp .. What would you use for a Ram Hunt ..

My hunting will be limited with a knee injury recovery this year but I have a follow-up appointment next week.

300 grain xpt. I killed plenty of deer and hogs with the 200 grain xpt. So that 300 grain should be a hammer.

      huntandfishguy6,

The Hornady 300 grain XPT is what I was leaning towards as the group better .. 1.5 - 2 inch groups at 100 yards.

        I’d go with the XTP.

XTP leaves a big ole hole

I have had too much success with plain old Winchester white box JSP’s to consider changing.

What ever shoots the best. Even if you get zero expansion that’s a big hole.

I’ve killed hogs with a 44mag 275gr hollow lead bullet at 1000fps at about 75 yards shot from a contender pistol. 300gr full house loads will crush a ram.

I’ve yet to shoot anything with a 44 mag rifle that didn’t die quickly. Out to 100 yards.

I shot the 240gr XTP out of my muzzleloader(50cal sabot) and they did the job every time. I estimate it was around 1500fps out of the muzzleloader, and you should be able to beat that with a hot 44mag load.

300gr will be a little slower but hit like a hammer. Just be aware of your ballistics and what the drop is past whatever range you zero at.

I’d choose the XTP as well.

The CVA rifles were made with a1:20" twist to stabilize heavier bullets. 240 grainers are ok accuracy wise but 300 gr bullets are much more accurate as they get 1 - 2 " groups compared to 3" groups for 240 grain bullets.

Range Report .. The Hornady won the accuracy test hands down with a 5 shot group measuring @ 1 1/4".
The 300 grain PPU SP weren't,t all that bad at 2.5" and I didn't have to make any scope adjustments..
