seems a lot of people think the 45-70 recoil is harsh,,,, ive shot one for 40 years ( marlin 1895 straight grip built in 73) i never thought it was bad at all, ( lots of full power handloads,),, especially since i have shot a few rounds of slugs an buck shot from a single shot 10 gauge,,,, while they were not pleasant, they were considerably less than i had expected !

I’ve got a Marlin .444 that shoots the Hornsby red tipped ammo and the dang deer would drop then get up and run off. I was shocked

The only way that could happen.. is if you don’t hit them in the right spot… You still have to do your part…

Those guns didn’t have recoil pads either… I had one of those… I’ve never been recoil sensitive either…

I think the big caliber is a "want to".
It's not a "have to". I posted that I use a coyote round.
This hog was killed with one 55gr soft point.
It did run 50 yards, but I recently shot one with a 300wm that went about 45. Click image for larger version

Where I hunt… there is thick brush… If a big boar runs 50 yards.. you’re probably not gonna find it… Maybe in a few days the buzzards will find it… You wouldn’t want to use a 223 here… You really need to drop them in their tracks… I’ve used lots of different calibers.. mostly 308 and 300 win mag…

I have a place like that back home I can still hunt. I’d usually take buckshot or slugs. If I didn’t hit head or shoulder, they’d run a little ways, but most of the time I could hear them crash.

I’ve experimented with slugs and rifled barrels…

Guy on the lease with me had a Marlin in .45-70 and I worked up a max load for 300-gr Barnes bullets that shot lights out. And, put out the hog's lights too. He called it his "Ham Slammer"
