For a contender, I'd probably go with a tubular red dot. My favorite is the Ultradot Gen 2 in 1". They also make it in 30 mm, if you want a bit more glass. If you prefer a smaller footprint like a reflex style, I have two that have always performed...my favorite being the Trijicon RMR 1MOA, and the other which is a little more budget friendly is the Vortex Venom 3MOA. Both of these will hold up to 'rocks and dynamite' loads. I've used both on calibers up to and including the 460.

Trijicon RMR - pros - extremely small footprint and 1MOA. Cons - the battery compartment isn't a 'top load' so when it comes time to replace the battery, you have to remove it from the gun. Kind-of a pain, but battery life is ridiculously long so not really a big deal. Still, I change all my batteries once a year, regardless, to give me piece of mind.

Vortex Venom - pros - still very small footprint and the battery compartment is on the top. No sight removal necessary to change out the battery. Cons - 3MOA.

Good luck with it and post a pic once you get it on!

Thanks, Don. I made these from a piece of stabilized maple burl. Here’s a better picture.
        Oh my God !

Been lurking at handgun hunting for a while now. Just won a Glock 17 in a raffle. I have no need for it as I already have a couple. The gun store said I can use the retail value as store credit.

what would be a pistol to get into?. I’d like to keep around 1500 for the pistol.

Ruger of your choice in that price range

Nothing wrong with Rugers but I would highly encourage you to look at Magnum Research BFRs. They are in your price range, are way better built than Ruger, and they come with a mount for optics should you decide to go that route. In my opinion, it is the best bang-for-your-buck in handgun hunting right now. A 7.5" .44 would cover a lot of needs for a new handgun hunter. HH is all I do and while I don't claim to be an expert, I have picked a few things up over the past 20+ years of doing it exclusively. Happy to help in any way I can. And willing to jump on a call with you if you have questions.

Sounds good. I am going to go to the store this week and see what they have and or what they carry.

For red dots what kinda distance can you shoot them at accurately? Brand new to handgun hunting and picked up a cva scout in 6.5 Grendel. I like the idea of the dot since my eyes pick it up much better but the lack of magnification has me on the fence which direction to go.

Well the gun you have is going to exceed what you can probably do with an optic that doesn't have magnification. However, if you go with a 1MOA dot such as the Trijicon RMR, then it really becomes a question of how good your eyes are. With my revolvers, I frequently make shots on steel out to 150 yards with a 1MOA.

Dan Wesson Bruin long-slide 10mm. Won’t get to shoot it for a few days but it arrived today and can’t wait to dig in with it. Ordered a few boxes of Underwood ammo to start with but I’ll likely load my own before long. Also have a red dot plate on the way for a Vortex Venom.

That should be a hog hammer with that Underwood ammo or equivalent reloads ! I have killed a few hogs with a G20 and plain old full jacket flat nosed bullets and if you hit them in the right spot they can’t hold it. Not a double lung bullet at all, but that hollow point at Underwood velocities will be.

My wheel guns will always be first and the jury is still out as to whether I can operate this contraption. Ha.

Update…red dot installed and holster built. Hoping the weather allows for some shooting this weekend.
