    .308 out of a 30-06

Long story short. I got in a hurry, grabbed some .308 ammo thinking it was 30-06 and never caught my mistake. Loaded the wrong ammo into a model 700 and shot it. I knew from the sound something was wrong. Opened the bolt and saw the .308 brass broke off at the neck, ugh.

How bad do yall think I screwed up my barrel, am I going to need to get it replaced?

It's probably fine. Bore scope it

If you didn't notice excessive pressure & only noise, the action should be fine as the 700 is pretty stout. Make sure there aren't any brass chips hiding. Was the bolt sticky or tough to lift after the shot??

I'm betting you're good to go. Was projectile gone and broken case piece in chamber? Looking at the length comparison, the bullet should've been close to centered. I would inspect the throat for damage.

The projectile fired, the casing would not eject. I got a rod and poked it out from the end of the barrel, once it was out, I could see the casing broke off where it necked down. So the part of the brass cartridge went down the barrel. I haven't scoped it yet, but wondering if I screwed up the rifling in the barrel.

Are you sure the neck of the case is not still in the chamber?

If a new 30-06 round will not chamber then it probably is. I'm thinking it probably followed the bullet on out after squeezing down as it entered the lands. Scope it and look closely in the throat and lands area. If it's still in the throat you could run a reamer in it to remove the brass. Definitely gunsmith work.

FYI the annealed neck of the brass case is softer than the copper jacket of the bullet which is work hardened after swedging so it probably didn't hurt the rifling.

What is the oal of the recovered 308...I would 'think' the neck / shoulder area would try to form to the body section of the 30-06 chamber & split vs getting shot off & leaving the muzzle??

This sounds like something I would do. In for the answer myself.

                        I agree.

OP, do you have a picture of the fired case?

Sorry, I probably should have stated a few other things.

This happened 2 weeks ago and I didnt keep the spent cartridge. When I got the cartridge out, it was broken off where the red arrow is.

I was able to chamber a 30-06 round and it fired fine, and hit what I was aiming at. But I wasnt exactly target shooting from a rest or at a paper target to see if the gun was still accurate. I am scared I may have messed up the rifling of the barrel.

Maybe this. The case didn't break off but did blow out to fill the chamber and what the end of the case is actually the original end of the 308 case. Essentially fire formed to what came out.
