Just tell them you're shipping gun parts. They don't need to know whether they're assembled or not. Insure it for what it's worth and problem solved.

I have shipped a half-dozen long guns to out-of-state FFLs in the last year thru the USPS without a single issue. I type an address label on my computer, print it out and put it on the box covered with clear tape. I take my copy of the FFL with me and that’s all it takes.

Several years back our local postmaster had her head up her third point of contact and refused to comply with USPS rules so I contacted the USPS Inspector General and explained the issue. About a week later I got a letter from the IG which had reference to the appropriate mail rules covering shipment of firearms, and also a copy of the letter they sent to the San Antonio regional headquarters as well as the local postmaster. Haven’t had a single problem since then.

If anyone would like copies of the documents, shoot me a PM with your email and I’ll send you a copy although it will be the end of the week.

Just shipped a rifle to an FFL via USPS that was delivered today. It was no issue at all. I took my tape dispenser to tape it up in case they wanted to check it but they didn’t. Just be sure to get tracking and signature required for the recipient.

Thanks for all the responses. Forgot to circle back to this. I found a gunsmith in Austin near my office that ships them... $50 plus the $30ish for shipping. He boxes them up.
It was worth it to me to go this route to get it done.
