    Reloading press modification

I have an old RCBS Jr 3 press and it's been very reliable. I've had it since probably 1981? Anyway, when mounted to the bench , it has to be so close to the face of the bench that the linkage strikes the face plate of the bench and I have to remove a big chunk of the face plate to gain clearance. I notices that the new presses form RCBS the linkage at the bottom of the press is different in that it basically goes straight up and down because the linkage is offset to the front of the press a little.

I've got a new work bench and I really don't want to take a chunk out of it. Does RCBS make such a thing? I sent them an email and the lady that responded said the Rock Chucker Supreme parts won't work.

    Any ideas?

No good advise here, I had the same problem when I bought a new Redding press. I notched out the bench just to be done with it.

Yeah, I really don't want to do that. I've got a really nice long bench with cabinets underneath and drawers that was built in to the garage of this house I purchased back in May. I want to refinish the bench top and then use the mounting bracket systems for my single stage press, my Lee progressive and I've got 4 gauges of Mec loaders. The ability to swap out loaders and create more space on the bench when I need it is a plus.

My presses for both rifle and shotgun are mounted on 2” square tubing like the hitch ball on your truck. I have the receiver tube mounted under the bench with set screws to take up the slack.

          This is what I use.

I used 1/2 thick aluminum plate to mount some of my presses. You can anchor the plate and offset the press. It requires drilling and tapping the plate.

Mine is like kmitchl. All 3 loaders are on 2" tube that slides into a 2 1/2x1/4 tube. There are 2 tubes on the bench so my trimmer and my powder measure also slide into them.

I mounted my press on a piece of 1/4" x 12" x 8" 6061-T6 aluminum plate with machine bolts and locking nylon nuts, so the bolt-heads are inverted and recessed into the plate on the bottom/bench side. Locking nuts are on top/press side of the combo. The aluminum plate allowed precise standoff of the press and clearance of the levers from the plate which are very close. The plate has enough extra length to it that I can use a couple of C-clamps to clap it down on each end to my bench. The aluminum plate has some 1/8" hydroturf Neoprene on the bench side to keep from marring up the bench-top wood. It also makes it very easy to remove and have full flat bench use if needed. That is also how I mounted one of my shotty shell presses, except on a little larger piece of 3/4" ply board.

The rest of my presses will get the same with the aluminum plate.

Long time ago, when I built my garage and workbench. I just used a piece of 2x10., notched it and mounted the press to that and mounted that to the bench.

Pretty much a No Brainer and the man is easy to deal with. I have a Forster co-ax and I did modify my plate to angle the press a little more to the left for my bench set-up.
