The two brothers on Swamp Men eat them. But then again they don't seem to be the sharpest tools in the shed!

Can't speak for gator gar, we don't have them here, but the spotted ones are fine dining. The live in Chinese chef/maid/wife skins them, slices them up vertically (makes about 1/2 inch steaks out of them kinda like butterfly back straps) and does something magical to them. Fine dining. Better than crappie even (well, not quite). Somehow or another, she makes them taste about like halibut steaks. Kinda had my doubts, but when you think about it all they eat is minnows and other live things. They're just uglier than all get out.

                yummy.

But, then again, I eat merganzers and coots, too.

Its all good. Its all in the prep.
Amen to that. Very few things I haven't/won't eat and most of it's pretty good if you don't think about what your eating.

Years ago we hunted out of state. Bottled water and thats it! If you wanted to eat you had to kill it..we were there 5 days. On day 3 of ZERO food, I got in the Canoe and shot 3-5 small spotted gar, and a drum. I cleaned them all....then chunked them in the woods and went hungry one more day.

Next day I shot a deer the size of a rabit (honestly every oz. of meat fit in a 1gallon freezer bag). There was nothing left in one night.

Luckily I shot a doe the size of a horse the next day and all was good.

                  Gar (any kind)= nasty

                  Carp...if I'm starving

Buffalo....good if not for the bones

                  bowfin..... ohh @%^% no!

Shad...taste AWESOME!!!! let me know if you want me to cook you some to sample
You find me any fish swimming and I can find you a fisherman somewhere that will swear it is the best eatin' fish that swims.
How do you cook your shad? I've heard old timers say it is great smoked and spread on a saltine.
