Three of us showed up Sunday afternoon. My buddy Tim and my wife were after either an elk cow or a red deer hind and I was just the arm candy/boy toy for my wife. We met new friends Kyle (bowhunt-R), and his future brother in law/camera man Dre, and Tim ran into a young man named Chris who was one of his Eagle Scouts from his troop and his father Tom. Tim had brought Chris and Tom and bunch of other kids to fish in my pond when they were little Tiger Cubs 15 or 16 years ago - small world! Chris caught his first fish that day - a big old channel cat that almost pulled him into the water. Chris has a bright future in front of him as he is in currently in his first year of dental school. I told him his future success was probably due to him catching his first ever fish in my pond and that it was only fair that he repay my by providing my first ever red stag at Diamond C. I am not positive but I think he thought that was great idea. We all had a great time and we are planning a group return visit in August.
After the introductions and chilling for a couple of hours, it was time to go hunting! We loaded up for the trip to the stands around 3:30. It was pretty windy yesterday afternoon but we hoped for the best.
Dawn's favorite stand (same one where she took an axis last year):
Within a few minutes, we had a herd of about 30 blackbucks (mostly does and a couple of nice bucks) come by for a visit. After a little while they wandered off but before long, we spotted a couple of nervous red deer hinds feeding towards us. Most of the time they kept brush between us and them and when they were in the clear, Dawn wasn't comfortable with the >30 yard range and so we just watched.
After they wandered off, a trio of young fallow bucks came by. We nicknamed them the three musketeers. One was white, one was chocolate, and one was spotted. They wondered in and out 3 or 4 times over the course of the afternoon.
Tim was hunting a few hundred yards away and right at last shooting light, he sent a text that he had shot a red deer hind! He said a pair fed into his setup and he let an arrow fly at 15 yards. He lost the blood after about 40 yards and was waiting for Skylar and Mazy, the wonder dog. Skylar picked us up and we headed for Tim's stand. A couple of minutes after Mazy started looking, Tim laid his hands on his deer! She had only made it about 10 yards beyond where the blood stopped.
Skylar had the deer dressed and in the walk in and after steaks and taters and a few beers, it was off to bed.
We were back in the same stand before daylight this morning. We saw a nice group of red deer on the way to the stand so we were feeling pretty good. We had climbed the ladder and were still setting up chairs when animals started trickling in! We held our breath while getting settling in, easing a shooting window open, getting an arrow nocked, and the release clipped on while 8 or 10 red deer and fallow ate corn and protein 20 yards away! After what seemed like hours (but probably about 20 minutes), it was finally getting light enough to see the pins and animals clearly. At 7:15, she let an arrow fly and thought it was a good hit. I watched the deer run for about 35 yards then it disappeared. It was fairly open over that way so I was pretty sure the deer was down. After about 15 minutes, I got down to see if I could spot the arrow. I found it a couple of yards behind where the deer was standing. Bright red blood - this is looking good!
After the standard 30 minute wait (or so...OK...after 5 minutes), I scanned the flat and didn't see anything so I walked a few yards in the direction she went. Found her - easy 30 yard track - perfect shot placement!
Back to NM from an awesome weekend at the a Diamond C. They place is legit and Skylar is a hell of a guy. I already booked a return trip for late summer. My goal was to shoot an axis buck and a black buck. I had been wanting to hunt exotics for about 15 years and finally booked a hunt last winter. I was set to arrive in June and days before my hunt we had a family emergency. Well I rescheduled for December and the weekend finally arrived. Once I got to the ranch I talked with Skylar and he was very honest with me. He said that a blackbuck is doable, but most of the axis had already shed their antlers. I decided to stick to my guns and hunt one buck that Skylar had said had just shed his velvet. On my first sit Friday evening I had fallow bucks, hogs, ibex, sika deer, and anger less axis bucks in front of me for most of the evening but nothing I really wanted to shoot. The next morning I was in a different stand and I was covered up with game once again. At about 8:00 two blackbuck came in and I decided that I would try for the bigger of the two. He turned and gave me a broadside shot at 20 yards and I made that shot count. I had my first blackbuck on the ground on my second sit of the trip. I continued to work hard to hunt axis bucks and I saw axis on every sit over the next two days. The only buck they had antlers that I would see was a small buck that had a stub for a right antler. I saw this buck at every stand I sat in. I talked with some of the other hunters in camp and they informed me that I should think about shooting this buck because he could be the only buck with antlers. None of the other hunters were really seeing any axis with angers either. So on Monday morning I'm sitting in a stand and I have 9 axis bucks all anger less in front of me. They eventually feed off and some blackbuck and sika deer come in to the stand. At 7:55 my brother in law says here comes the crooked born. I look up and sure enough he's headed our way. I told Dre to start filming and when he turns broadside to be ready. The buck is nervous and after about 15 minutes he commits to the corn. He feeds to 25 yards and turns broadside. I tell myself it's now or never. I pick a spot, take a deep breath, say a small prayer and before I know it I see my arrow slam through the bucks left shoulder. We replay the footage and confirm the shot was good. 30 minutes later Skylar arrives and Mazy leads us to my first ever axis buck. Man what a rush. 15 years of waiting and dreaming and I now had two awesome trophies down. It was an amazing feeling to accomplish a long time dream of mine. After talking with Skylar some more we decided to book another trip to the diamond c for late in the summer. No met some cool people on the trip and I'm looking forward to returning once again! Thanks to everyone who helped make this trip possible!

Nice recap, Kyl - congrats again on some fine trophies! We've been going out there a couple of times per year for the past 6 or 7 years and have always had a good time with plenty of shot opportunities. We are looking forward to the return engagement!
