Well we made our annual trip to Brushy Hill after Thanksgiving. Once again Nick set us up. We only get to go for a couple of days at a time and Nick setting us up suits our needs the best. We saw plenty of game in our group of 3 and hunted Hog Heaven North. Nick did an awesome job with the set-ups and we couldn't ask for any more. Thanks Nick.
Our first evening hunt went well. I saw a 4 point and 5 doe's. I shot at a big ole mule headed doe and misjudged the distance costing me some backstrap. My cousin saw a 3 point, 6 point, 7 point and 6 doe's. He ended up shooting a hog that came in and ran off the deer eating corn in front of his blind. My pop got shut out the first night of a fresh set-up. The second evening hunt I was a little discouraged about my misjudgment the day before and was ready to get it done. At about 4 pm the deer started moving in. It was the same group of doe's I was about to shoot that big doe for real this time when she bolted into the brush. A 6 point ran her off but the other doe's stayed. So I picked out another and was waiting for her to come into my shooting lane when out of the corner of the pop up window I saw horns moving. Oh my word, there he was. Exactly what I came to shoot. A very nice mature 8 point. I would guess between mid 120's-130. I waited for the right time drew my bow and bam. Upon release I realized I hadn't checked my arrow clearance on the blind when I noticed the top of the bush in front of the window thrash back and forth followed by dust kicking up 5' short of the buck. He bolted and I sunk into the chair, knowing that dust kicking up was my arrow falling short on the 12 yard shot. I can't believe it. I screwed up the shot with one minor error that I forgot to check, ARROW CLEARANCE. Every one else saw bucks. And had shot opportunities. We had a blast and will be back next year. The bucks were starting to fight and be active. I had bucks on my cams I set up and saw a ton of Turkey. Nick is a great guy and I met MeatStick (I think that is how he spells it.) when we were leaving.
