    Brushy Hill Review

Well we made our annual trip to Brushy Hill after Thanksgiving. Once again Nick set us up. We only get to go for a couple of days at a time and Nick setting us up suits our needs the best. We saw plenty of game in our group of 3 and hunted Hog Heaven North. Nick did an awesome job with the set-ups and we couldn't ask for any more. Thanks Nick.

Our first evening hunt went well. I saw a 4 point and 5 doe's. I shot at a big ole mule headed doe and misjudged the distance costing me some backstrap. My cousin saw a 3 point, 6 point, 7 point and 6 doe's. He ended up shooting a hog that came in and ran off the deer eating corn in front of his blind. My pop got shut out the first night of a fresh set-up. The second evening hunt I was a little discouraged about my misjudgment the day before and was ready to get it done. At about 4 pm the deer started moving in. It was the same group of doe's I was about to shoot that big doe for real this time when she bolted into the brush. A 6 point ran her off but the other doe's stayed. So I picked out another and was waiting for her to come into my shooting lane when out of the corner of the pop up window I saw horns moving. Oh my word, there he was. Exactly what I came to shoot. A very nice mature 8 point. I would guess between mid 120's-130. I waited for the right time drew my bow and bam. Upon release I realized I hadn't checked my arrow clearance on the blind when I noticed the top of the bush in front of the window thrash back and forth followed by dust kicking up 5' short of the buck. He bolted and I sunk into the chair, knowing that dust kicking up was my arrow falling short on the 12 yard shot. I can't believe it. I screwed up the shot with one minor error that I forgot to check, ARROW CLEARANCE. Every one else saw bucks. And had shot opportunities. We had a blast and will be back next year. The bucks were starting to fight and be active. I had bucks on my cams I set up and saw a ton of Turkey. Nick is a great guy and I met MeatStick (I think that is how he spells it.) when we were leaving.

I'm heading there right now so hopefully they'll be moving good for us. We're hunting Will Rehm.

Good luck. I've never hunted that pasture.

Just got home from Brushy Hill. It was HOT and the moon was BRIGHT!

Given these two factors, I don't feel I can give a fair assessment of BH's potential. For my brother-in-law, it was the best hunt he'd ever been on even though no shots were fired. We hunted in the middle "Will Rehm" pasture, he hunted on the corn route and I hunted off of it. We had Nick set up two stands. We saw deer in them but they appeared to know the stands were there. We both ended up hunting our own setups and the deer were much calmer. It didn't appear to have rained in a while, it was very dusty and there were tracks everwyhere. We both saw deer 3 out of 6 hunts. He thought a couple of the bucks he saw were shooters but he wasn't sure and they stayed out about 40 yards from him. I saw a small doe, a couple big doe and a spike that was 7ish inch spikes. Hogs spooked one of the doe as she was circling and the other one was just passing through and never paid attention to the corn. The small doe was too small to shoot and the spike was close enough to 7" that it wasn't worth taking a $500 gamble. I gave up waiting on the spike to leave the corn so slipped out of my blind and walked away while he was still eating. Last night on the way back to camp we came upon a herd of hogs in the middle of the road. We got out of the truck and my brother-in-law slammed his door. So much for pork.
Tomme Actkinson was there while we were and he saw some good deer and a small group of hogs. He and the other two hunters in our camp saw quite a few more deer than I did but that could be attributed to our setups. I could only see about 30 yards down two lanes and the other guys could see quite a bit farther. They say the rut hasn't kicked in yet but it should with the next cold snap.

Accomodations were decent for a day lease. I've stayed in much more meager places and the company was good as well.

Got back yesterday from Brushy Hill. Between 9 of us we seen a lot of deer. Several small young bucks and several doe. Good number of shooter bucks were also seen but no one connected. One guy killed a 9 but didn't meet the 14" rule. Bucks are still not in full rut but very close. Wish I could have hunted this week instead of last fri.- mon. Think whoever is there from now through end of season should have a lot of luck. Our best trip there even though not much was shot. Good luck every going.

14" rule? Is this a ranch rule? What happens to the deer if it's not within the requirements? What happens to the hunter?

You pay a restock fee of 500.00!! Read there brochure. Shouldn't be shooting anything that close anyways!! "when in doubt, back out!!!!"
