    First KJO Trip

Made my first Keith Johns Outdoors trip this weekend. Although I didn't connect with an animal, I had a wonderful time! Keith and his ranch hand Cooper worked their butts off for us, changing stand locations based on animal movements. The highlight of the trip was being there when Corey(pseevo7ccg) got his first bowkill. Corey was the only "killer" of the trip, harvesting an 80 pound hog and a Texas Dall Ram. It was hard hunting, with everything being green from the rain and the animals not really hitting the feeders. I will definitely be back to Keiths place and I can't recommend it enough. I saw tons of animals every sit and saw a lot of nice Axis and Blackbuck bucks. Also saw an outstanding Sika buck on the last day. Can't wait til I go back! Thanks Keith, for a great weekend.

I have a hunt booked for early may at KJO, any thoughts or advice. I have never done a hunt like this before.
If I understand we are on our own for food, what are the facilities like for cooking?
How about meat care...we will have to ship meat back home (if lucky enough to score) does he have freezer space? How about butcher service (grinding)?
What is hog meat like? Worth shipping?

I am looking forward to the hunt and hope to have a shot at hogs and / or exotics?
How easy is it to judge the blackbuck, axis, aoudad for size and maturity?

You are coming from Alaska to hunt in TX? Interesting. I haven't been to KJO yet so I can't give you the details on that. Generally with blackbuck three full twists is a great animal, but not many get that big. Good luck with the hunt.

Keith's cabin sleeps 10-12 people shower and bath room, full kitchen but u need to bring food and drinks. There are alot of animals at Keith's but like the guy said if it is realy green u may not have a great killing trip but it is always fun at KJO's fire pit drinks and grub.

Is it really that strange that I am coming from Alaska? I will be there (San Antonio) for a conference and thought I might as well add a little hunting while I am there. I hear there is a lot of hunting opportunity and good hospitality in Texas. I enjoy both! Since exotics and hogs are what is in season...why not give it a go?
When I get back from Texas I will resume hunting here for bear if I have not filled tags yet. We have tons of snow this year so expect maybe a late start to bears coming out of hibernation.

Thanks for the info on blackbuck judging.

Hmm, is there a spot open? Would love to try to hunt with a "valley" resident. I just moved back to Tx from a 2 1/2 year stint in AK.

I know Keith has a huge walk-in cooler, so storing it won't be a problem. Don't think he has the processing equipment, but I'm sure he knows where to get it done for you. He has a lot if animals, but they are hunted every day and are very wary. Use the wind to your advantage and control your scent the best you can, you should have a good chance at a shot. All the Axis deer were still in velvet when I was there, so I don't know how big they were. He did have some nice 18"+ Blackbuck running around. Good luck on your trip, you will have a blast!

Most people I know would sell their soul to hunt Alaska. If you are going to be here anyway I totally get that. I thought you were planning a trip to only hunt exotics. Fun, but I can't imagine it holding a candle to Alaska. Good luck with your trip!

I am one of those folks that always wanted to hunt Alaska. I could not afford to hunt alaska as a non-resident. I was lucky enough to be able to move to Alaska from Montana eight years ago. It is awesome. Lots of hunts can still be expensive here even for residents, especially if you want to do a fly out type hunt. $500 for KJO hunt might be considered cheap compared to a fly out hunt, even for residents.
For me this trip is a chance to hunt something different and since flights are paid for and If I have to be out of state, I might as well hunt.
It sounds like it might be more challenging than most people think...including myself. I guess I will find out.

X 2......we had a real good time, even though all of the fresh green growth, had the animals pretty much bypassing the feeders.
