    Richland Creek WMA scouting trip

Well its getting about that time of year for our hotter than hell scouting trip to RC. Every year in july we pick a compartment and spend the day scouting it out in anticipation of the draw hunts. In past years we have scouted compartments 15, 16 and 17 in the north unit, and 4 and 5 in the south unit. Not many deer sighted last year, but lots of hogs, will be packing a bow this year. Anyone have any info on how the WMA is doing and or how the hog hunting has been?

Anyone know if its really grown up out there or has it been dry this year?

I drove by it not too long ago headed for some fishing near Richland Chambers. It's very dense underbrush along that flat of the trinity river. I'm sure there are tons of hogs. Can't speak too much about it now days. I had a good friend that hunted that place about 6-8 yrs ago when it was a walk in archery. He saw tons of deer then.

Actually I got to thinking about it and its been 10 years since they changed it to type III only for deer, doesn't seem that long. I never hunted it back then but have talked to several who used to take big deer out there every year bowhunting.

I've been there for two draw hunts and have shot three does, and both times I've seen more than one 120 - 130 class buck each morning/evening sit. Both hunts were doe only.

Thanks for the info, the biggest buck of the '06 hunts was taken back there I think, real nice 11 point. I wouldn't mind scouting it but its way back there and I only think they stick you there if you have some sort of ATV.

We didn't have an ATV but we did have a Land Rover.

Are you allowed to drive that center road if you're not on a draw hunt, to scout? We had a heck of a time getting back there but it was sure fun!

We never have had issues in the past, we drove the cut that runs into 5 towards the marsh just west of long lake on last years scouting trip.

Here are the maps and compartment boundaries for the north and south units. We haven't made a decision on which unit(s) to scout this year. Any suggestions would be appreciated, also anyone is welcome to tag along.

The big buck taken in 2006 archery hunt was in comp. 8 I think.

It's been a several years since I hunted there but 9, 10 and 12 have private lands that but up to it and they run feeders all the time. Find some trails and sit and wait.
