I hit the lottery and was drawn for Powderhorn WMA gun deer either sex with exotics on 11/2-11/4. I honestly had never heard of the place until a couple weeks ago while signing up for the draw, figured why not give it a shot. I lost my lease of 20 years this year so it is definitely a blessing.
I am looking for tips for hunting the area as I have never hunted that part of Texas. From what I gather, the Sambar like the marsh and open areas surrounding. I have a 6.5 creedmoor and a 4x4 truck with basic road tires. I have thought about upgrading my rifle choice and tires just for this hunt. If anyone that has hunted the place can chime in and let me know if it's necessary, please do so.
On Facebook it was suggested for good water proof boots that go to the knee, anyone have recommendations? I have chest waiders, but that doesn't seem like a great option for walking any real distance.
How are people retrieving their game? Quarter it up and pack out, game cart?
What is the blind situation? Should I find a mobile tripod to take with me and set up? Recommendations on brand are welcome.
Any recommendations on a place to stay in Seadrift or Port O'Connor? I don't need anything fancy, just basic necessities in a decent area. I plan to look at VRBO and Airbnb as I would think that is the off season and could get a better rate.
I am really excited about the hunt and figure it's a once in a lifetime deal, so I want to do it right. Thank you in advance for any help.
