My dad and I were out at the primitive launch yesterday morning. Did some stalking startin from the river and worked our way up to 6. My dad was only visiting from VA and never been hog hunting. We obviously wanted to harvest one and I knew that area we would at least see something, which we did. We called it around 11 so we started heading back to the north parking lot and ran up on a hog layin down. We were totally caught off guard and she took off! It was definitely a good size hog.
I completely agree that this forum is making the lil piggies uneasy and are harder to find, but that is what we have to deal with when it comes to public hunting. I would rather let people know my round about areas that I hunt... for one, you don't get rookies out there and get an arrow slung at me, two, it creates group hunts that will hopefully get success. There is always bad that comes with the good. I love to hunt on my own, quiet time for me and I can make less noise stalking... but that was back in VA where I had a dairy farm to myself. But, going blind into a new area definitely sucks. I liked the heads up that I got and I have definitely got boots on the ground time there. You do have to get out to the unit to figure out the lay of the land, find the hot spots and get the experience is the best way to find the hogs. Google maps can only take you but so far. Now that I know where a lot of people go, I will span out from those areas and get some more time on the ground in other areas. It will take time, but there will be spots out there that no one has been to in a while. Crossing fingers, it will produce hogs in the freezer.
All in all, that is why they call it "hunting" and not "killing"...
