2018 TPWD Draw Hunts - let the fun begin

Whats not happening at Granger? The biggest free range deer I've ever seen in Texas was @ Granger.

Granger last year, but hadn’t harvested a doe yet. He was the smaller buck I saw.

Nice! Any advice as per spots and such or sizes of bucks to look for and expect? Kiddo is 14 so he's going to want to shoot any decent looking deer I'm sure but I want to give him something to hunt for. We've duck hunted out there since forever but this will be the 1st deer hunt. Kiddo has access to 25-06 and 308, last year he was good only to 150 yards or so then groups start to suffer a bit. That concerns me a little, island seems like longer shots are likely.

I hunted on the East side of the island and the buck I shot was about 70 yards out. I can't remember for sure which blind it was I think 4? There are a lot of blinds where you can see 400+ yards. I shot a cull 6 but there were a few 10s and 12s killed. They may not score much more than 130-140 but they look big on a 110lb deer lol. The bigger ones were killed on the West end of the island with the exception of a couple that were killed in a blind right on the surf.

It was blind 7 I was in when I shot the buck. The lanes weren't much longer than 150 yards that I can remember.

I hunted there last year. It's a small park, but a good hunt. You will draw for spots and then be given time to go set up a spot. Make sure you brush in your blind really well.



I had heard some people had issues seeing animals there, but I killed a WT doe on the first evening and then had multiple WT bucks and doe within 5-20 yards for the remaining hunts. Never saw an exotic.

Thanks for the feedback. I used a GhostBlind last year at Garner SP and was impressed with how stealthy it can be if the wind is in your favor. Deer that came through had no clue a blind was there. I will bring a pop up, but will probably use my GhostBlind if the weather isn’t too lousy.

What are the new hunts you can register for? Grand Slam, ultimate mule deer hunt, premium buck hunt, nilgai safari. These were not on the regluar list last week and looked to be on a different website, even though it was the same.

A ghost blind should work well. Lots of cedar there. I set up a pop up in a cedar grove adjacent to the convergence of 3 trails. Another guy just brushed in a chair under a cedar I hunted that spot on the last day and saw a huge WT buck.

Big Time Texas Hunts.

Regular raffle for a very limited number of guided hunts, and no limit on the number of times you buy. This one has really bad odds, but someone can win the hunt of a life time for $10. Just like casino gambling, spend what you can afford, but be responsible.
