    Stand-by draw hunts

Just wondering what the odds are now for stand by spots. Is anyone getting picked? Archery or gun?
New lease sucks, trying to plan for next year already.
    Thanks

With the 2nd chance drawing TPWD started the standbys are very limited now. Varies by unit, IMO they are trying to phase out stands bys. I used to use the stand by hunts regularly but I haven't been drawn on a stand by hunt in over 5 years.

You can look in the draw book and see how many standbys showed up and how many were drawn. The WMA I went to had about 10 standby hunters and they drew 1 card with 4 names on it so 40% chance at that location. It does very from location to location. I don't know if I would drive a great distance on a chance, but if I had nothing better to do why not somebody has to win. The second draw only applies to the ones that miss the payment deadline, the stanby spots are for the ones that actually don't show up for the hunt and there are usually 1 or 2 that are no shows.

I'm not sure on this but if it wasn't at least 50/50 I wouldn't try. My gas, time off, etc. is worth more than that. Then consider the success rate on a place you've never hunted. I don't mean to be negative but there's a lot to consider ...unless you live close by and know the area.

How are standbys for youth hunts planning on taking my little brother next weekend. What's the process they follow to choose standby youth hunters?

My dad and I hunted fort boggy last month five hunters showed for two standby spots.
My daughter hunted Guadalupe delta wma in October on a youth hunt, 8 spots and only 4 hunters showed so all 4 stand by hunters got to hunt.

When I hunted Mason Mountain, they let all the stand by's hunt. A few weeks before my hunt, I called to get info on the set up, and the hunt coordinator told me point blank, if you come out early for stand by, we will put you out there. Just depends on the unit. There is a thread on here for Black Gap where there were no shows and a stand by hunter has been hunting there for years. I would call ahead and see if there are any available.

That's another one at Mason Mountain. They were doing a youth hunt 2 weeks after mine and they told all of us, BRING YOUR KIDS!!! The hunt was a couple days after Christmas.

Best thing to do is call the area a couple days before the hunt and find out how many, if any, stand by spots are available.

Like anything else the good spots are hard to get...the ones with low success rate especially during the week your gonna have a really good shot of getting in.

I've hunted standby at Huntsville...it's close to me so was worth the drive when I didn't have a good lease. I wouldn't drive far out of my way for a standby unless I was pretty sure I was getting it or had a backup plan in that area of something to make the drive worth it

Places like chap are much harder

Stand-by is a lot better odds then the draw itself and the way I got to hunt this season on Matador WMA and there was two of us and we both got to hunt! Also I don't think they will turn down hunters if they have room to put them in! The Odds are better than 50/50 if you try stand by hunts!

Good info here ^^ looking online at the stats from TPWD it varies a lot from place. I wonder if they capture all the data and put online for everyone ? I'll bet some fall through the cracks.

                              Yep

I have been on stand by hunts for the last 3 years. I call the sites just before and see how the turnout has been.

Bad weather is a good time to show up. Many people will pay their fee but may not want to hunt the rain.
