Help Please.... "Lost" Ground Blind, Stool, etc at Cooper...

I was hunting at Cooper yesterday on the north side of the lake between Klondike and Cooper. After the morning hunt, I decided to look around to find a hot trail with some fresh sign and hunt there that afternoon. I had my ground blind, stool, bow stand, bow, pack, etc with me.

I found a great trail, followed it towards where I figured they'd bed and when I got to a good stopping point, I decided to drop the blind, stool, etc right there to lighten my load a bit. I didn't set the blind up because I was going to look around a bit more and wanted to be able to move quickly if I found something better. Well, I did a bit more scouting, decided to leave the stuff where I'd dropped it, and left the area around 10:30a to run to town. I came back around 3:45p to get setup plenty early before the evening hunt. When I got back to the spot, my stuff wasn't there.

Let me assure you that I didn't "loose" it. I could take you to this spot in the dark... without a flash light... and I'm not talking about taking you to the general area, I'm talking about THE specific spot. I know exactly where I sat it down. That said, just to be sure, I marked the spot with my GPS when I dropped it off and even though I knew I was in the right spot when I returned, I went ahead and fired up the GPS just to make sure I wasn't crazy. I'm not. I was standing right where I'd marked the spot when I dropped the stuff off.

My first thought (and still what I figure actually happened) was that somebody stole it. However, I started thinking that perhaps someone else was scouting too and found the same area and ran across my stuff. Since I was no where to be found and the stuff was just dropped there on the ground and not actually set up, I was hoping that maybe they thought that I'd "lost" it and couldn't find it and they'd bring it out and return it to it's owner. Maybe when they came out I was already gone.... who knows... I can hope can't I?

I never saw anyone or any parked vehicles in that specific area all day. In fact, I only saw one other truck, a newer maroon Ford dually, within a reasonable walking distance, but that would have been a pretty long walk.

Perhaps it was someone who showed up after I left and left before I returned. I was kind of hoping that they would show up out there that evening, but no luck.

The ground blind is an Ameristep Doghouse with the leafy netting add-on. In the blind bag was a bow stand, rope, and camo netting. The stool is a Double Bull Magnum.

Unfortunatley, I can not afford to replace any of this right now. So I'm hoping and praying that someone found it thinking I'd "lost" it. I'm going to post a sign or two out there with my name and number, but figured I'd post to some of the online forums too in hopes of getting lucky.

If you happen to have it or know who does and are looking for the owner, I'd greatly appreciate a call at 817-689-5718.

    Thanks!
    Gary

        stands stolen

        Gary,

I feel your pain, I have had 2 stand setups stolen at Cooper WMA in the last two weeks! They did not actually get my lock on stands, because they were locked with a cable lock, but they took everything else that was not locked down. Including the seat cushion off the stands, bow holders, ropes, ratchet straps and steps! They just left the stand hanging in the tree by the cable lock. There are two individuals that I wont tolerate and those are thieves and liars! It is extremely unfortunate that we cannot go out and enjoy ourselves hunting anymore. I have hunted Cooper WMA for almost 6 years now and have never seen this much traffic and theft around the lake ever! I cant afford a lease, but I also cant afford to keep having my stuff stolen! Once again, I am very sorry to here about that happening to your stuff.

Hey guys I work at Liberty Chrisitan School In Argyle, TX And we have had many vandals and we had a car stolen and they tryed to rob the director who takes the bank deposits, well what I am getting at now adays and espcially right now there are alot of people that are broke and hurting money wise and the economy is bad so therefor when times get tough the people get tougher as far as crime so expect the crime rate to go up all around hunting, work, vehicles, all that stuff just be smart and hopefully after elections things will calm down.

Public hunting Rule #1 - What you carry in, make sure you carry out. Seems as if there are thieves everywhere. If I hunt public land I use a climber that is easily carried in or out. Its a shame that a person has to do that but it is a sign of the times.

              Scum of the earth

One of my hunting partners had some stands stolen at Whitney. Yes, he shouldn't have left it in the woods for several months, but that doesn't justify stealing.

This sounds more like the GW or WMA staff confiscated them.

Probably so alot of people will call stands left in the woods in to whoever the controlling authorities are.

                    calling in stands

people should mind there own business, when calling in stands. I am in a seasonal business, and hunt pretty much every other day during deer season, and to take down your lock on stands every day and put them back 1 day later is a pain in the rear. I dont condone leaving them out all year, but leaving them for the season is justifyable if you are hunting them 5 out of a 7 day week. Just my 2 cents! And you better lock them up with cable locks if you plan on leaving anything on public land!

just play by the rules and you won't have any problems.

thieves have a solution for this, its called bolt cutters, park rangers won't hesitate to do the same, seen it.

This is why I use a climber when I can and bring it out with me every night, or I use a childs chair and set up next to a tree. I never have to wonder if my stand is going to be there in the morning when I show up. I have a new pop up but have better luck with the chair.

                            public land

I have seen both side of this. I believe the rules are at most WMAs is 72 hours. there are about 4 hang on stands that I could walk to at Cooper that have been there for years. To me that is the same a littering. Same with the wooden leaning ladder stands.

At Cooper if you are not in your stand it will be stolen. I hunted late one morning in a ground blind and had a guy walk up to my blind that I was still in. When I said something to him he acted like he didn't see my blind. I could tell the whole time he was tying to look into it... He was wanting a discount. Oh well. Pack it in, pack it out.

I have seen some guys that weren't hunting following the new flagging taped trails looking for stands. If your not in it.... it can and will disappear.

I do consider it a great pain to carry it in and out every time, but If I want to keep it, thats the way it has to be...

Sorry for your loss and if I hear anything I will let you know. by the way... I have hidden my stuff under a cedar tree before and that worked. Just don't use flagging tape.
