... If you live within reasonable distance and have an intention of actually showing up and hunting. I know several ppl last year who did not and just wasted a tag. Part of what's wrong with the system.

Agreed.
I was actually hoping nobody would post this. Not because I don't want folks to get their permit, but rather so the ones who are serious about using it, will get it. Last year, my brother applied on line - for free - and got one. I applied and did not. He lives more than 2x as far from the NF as I do, and never bothered to go. P'd me off.
I know the old postcard method created more work for the FS staff, but I preferred it a lot. I would actually prefer having to go GET a permit from the office on the Forest before season starts. That would encourage people to at least get out and scout a little, and reward those who were really serious about using it.
If the goal of the WMA is to properly manage deer numbers, they sould be more than a little concerned by the number of unused permits created by this free online drawing system.

You mean to tell me you don't want someone who lives in Amarillo and MIGHT come to Houston for Thanksgiving and thinks they're going to hunt to get drawn for a permit?
Agreed. I imagine quite a few tags go unused. I assume the number of does killed went down last year and will continue to go down as long as they keep doing the online applications and free tags. Hopefully TPWD notices this and takes action. Whether it be changing the system to reduce applications (go back to postcards or start charging for the draw) or increasing the number of tags.

Either option would accomplish the goal. But what we have right now is just frustrating for those of us who will absolutely take advantage of an antlerless permit.
In 2012 and 2013, I was drawn and made good on those tags.
There were 167 does taken with permits last year in the forest, 18% success rate. 911 out of 1,360 permits users reported hunting the forest. I don't have date from previous years, so not sure how it compares...
Sorry to all those who didn't draw their doe permit. I know the feeling as I didn't get mine last year for the first time. I count on that doe in the freezer every year. My family eats venison almost exclusively instead of beef, and has for over a decade now. Last winter was the first time I ran out of venison in over 10 years.
Didn't get picked but was happy as a few unexpected hunts came available that would have only given me 2-6 days total to hunt there if I was drawn. I like others do wish they had a way to pull your name out of the hat because I was worried i was gonna screw someone out of a spot.
