My son and I were drawn for the hog hunt. I have never been to Matador, does anyone have any advice on what unit or where to look for the hogs out there?
Thanks
Bump one more time for you. I haven't been on this hunt, but on most I have been on the TPWD guys are great about trying to get you on the hogs. Also, you can give the WMA a call to ask about roads and campground if no one on here knows. Good luck and please post up how you guys do.
Haven't been in years. I will say that once you see the gorgeous muleys out there you're gonna start putting in for them every year. Also, if you want to have a little fun with the does, blow a wounded rabbit call and sit real still. They'll about run you over.
Roads should be mostly good. There are some that you want a 4X4 on a dry day but its nearly 30,000 acres so there is a lot of area to drive with no problems in 2wd.
Campground is primitive but in a nice area.
Hogs are all over but concentrate on the lower watery/riparian type areas or if you get a unit next to private wheat fields set up on trails early and late. I have seen a ton of wildlife there but never have really hunted hogs. Be careful and don't shoot Javi's. They will frown on that and you will likely see them.
There are not any deer there whatsoever. Muleys or Whitetails so don't pay any mind to the above comments
How was the hunt? I'm going to be up there turkey hunting in a few weeks. My first time. Did you see or hear any? Any recommendations on compartment?
I know they close part of this area off for turkey season, but I was up there about 4 years ago for Mule Deer. There were a lot of turkey around the East Aeromotor pasture. They got a roost pretty close in there.
