I was just in junior high when that song came out but it was a poignant moment - an "Ah-a, now I get it" moment for me. One Sunday a well-known member of our church had just come back from Viet Nam. He had been a stud athlete from a great family that everybody admired. He had lost his legs in the war and rolled into our Sunday School class in a wheelchair and talked about his experience and how his faith sustained him. My memory is foggy now but I seem to remember that later night we saw Barry Sadler sing "Green Berets" on either the Ed Sullivan Show or maybe it was the Jimmy Dean Variety Show. It really affected me the first time I understood sacrifice
