Hey Marshman, There is some beautiful country there in the six mile area. I would say that the buck(mature) population is thin, since it is public land.The only way that I hunt the area is by still hunting large blocks of country, keeping a low profile with scent control, where I see no sign of hunters, and once I find sign of a big buck, using the knowledge of the land from 20 years of hunting it, I try to set some hunts for him. This is not easy, to say the very least!
The one thing I do not do is hunt without at least a little knowledge of some good buck in the area, sometimes from just the previous years hunts. Hunting areas on the National Forest without this knowledge can lead to seeing no bucks the whole season.
